Blackburn TR65 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Blackburn TR65 come insulated, or do I have to tape or heat shrink the splice?
It ships bare. No insulation is supplied on the TR65, so the splice has to be insulated in the field with tape, a heat shrink sleeve, or a cold shrink tube rated for the conductor voltage once the crimp is made.
2) Does the Blackburn TR65 meet ANSI C119.4 for conductor connectors?
Yes. The TR65 passes the requirements of ANSI C119.4, the standard covering connectors used between aluminum and copper conductors. That is the reference inspectors and utility specs usually ask for on a service entrance splice.
3) Can I splice aluminum service entrance cable with the Blackburn TR65?
That is exactly what it is built for. The TR65 is an aluminum body compression splice for service entrance conductors, and it carries the ANSI C119.4 qualification that covers aluminum to aluminum and aluminum to copper connections. Use an oxide inhibiting compound on aluminum conductors and crimp with the die the connector calls for.
4) Is the Blackburn TR65 a bolted or a compression connector?
Compression. The TR65 has to be crimped with a compression tool and the correct die, so it is a one shot, permanent splice, not a mechanical set screw connector you can back off and reuse. If the job needs a splice that can be opened later for testing or reconfiguration, a set screw or bolted splice is the right choice instead.
5) How many conductors does one Blackburn TR65 splice take?
Two, one in each end of the barrel. It is a straight inline splice for joining a single run, not a multi tap or a pigtail connector. A three way or four way joint needs a separate tap connector or one splice per pair.
6) What is the Blackburn TR65 part number and where is it made?
The manufacturer part number is TR65, made in Mexico. Order by that number when matching an existing splice in the field so the crimp die and barrel length stay consistent across the run.
