Blackburn RS4525 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Blackburn RS4525 service entrance splice insulated, or do I have to tape or sleeve it after crimping?
The RS4525 is a bare compression splice with no insulation on the body, so the joint has to be insulated in the field with tape, a heat shrink sleeve, or an insulating cover appropriate to the voltage and location. Plan that material into the job.
2) Does the Blackburn RS4525 splice meet utility connector standards for a service entrance tap?
It passes the requirements of ANSI C119.4, the standard covering electrical connectors for use between aluminum and copper conductors. That is the reference inspectors and utilities most often ask for on a service entrance compression splice.
3) How many conductors does the Blackburn RS4525 aluminum compression splice join?
Two. It is a straight two conductor splice, one cable in each end, crimped with a compression tool and the correct die. It is not a multi tap connector, so a three way or four way splice needs a different body.
4) How long is the RS4525 splice barrel, and will it fit in my meter socket or service box?
The splice measures 4-1/2 inches, so allow at least that much straight run plus room for the crimp tool head and the insulation you wrap over it. In tight gutters and meter sockets that clearance is usually the deciding factor.
5) Can I install the Blackburn RS4525 with a mechanical set screw connector tool, or do I need a hydraulic crimper?
It is a compression connector, not a mechanical one, so it has to be crimped with a compression tool and the matching die set for the barrel. There are no set screws or bolts on the body.
6) Is the Blackburn RS4525 sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each, one splice per unit, under manufacturer part number RS4525. Order one per joint, and remember a two conductor service run needs one per phase plus one for the neutral if it is being spliced.
7) Where is the Blackburn RS4525 splice made?
Manufactured in Mexico. That matters on public jobs with domestic sourcing language in the spec, so check the contract requirements before submitting it.
