American Lock AME-A10MK 2KEY – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the MK in American Lock A10MK mean, and how is it different from the A10KA?
A10MK is the master keyed, keyed different version: every lock has its own change key, and all of them open under a master key set at the factory. The A10KA is keyed alike, meaning a group of locks shares one key with no master above it. There is also an A10KAMK, which is keyed alike within the group and master keyed on top. Same solid aluminum body and cylinder across all of them, only the keying differs.
2) Can the A10MK padlock be rekeyed later if a tenant loses a key?
No. The A10MK uses a non-rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder, so it is factory keyed to your specification and cannot be repinned in the field. For self storage and locker programs that is usually the point, since it keeps key control at the factory, but it does mean a lost-key situation is handled by replacing the lock rather than rekeying it.
3) Will an American Lock A10MK fit my hasp? What is the shackle opening?
The A10MK shackle is 5/16 inch in diameter with a 1-1/8 inch clearance height and 3/4 inch between the legs, on a body 1-3/4 inch wide. Measure the hasp staple: the staple has to pass a 5/16 inch shackle, and the 3/4 inch inside width limits how thick a hasp loop or chain link you can capture.
4) I need padlocks for a self storage facility with a house master key. Is this the right lock?
Yes, that is the intended use. The A10MK is keyed different with a factory-set master, so each unit gets a unique key while staff open anything with the master. It is called out for self-storage units and lockers, and it carries Edge key control so change keys are not duplicated over the counter. Give American Lock your master key system requirements when you order, since the cylinder is factory keyed and not field rekeyable.
5) If I need a padlock that can be rekeyed in the field instead of factory-keyed only, what should I use instead of the American Lock A10MK?
The A10MK is a non-rekeyable padlock, so its cylinder is set at the factory and cannot be re-pinned later. For an opening where you want to control keying yourself, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so the core can be pulled and swapped as your keying changes. The Medeco 5260 is another route, a 52 Series brass body padlock with M3 key technology and a 7/16 inch shackle diameter.
6) Which padlock has the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter as the American Lock A10MK?
The A10MK uses a 5/16 inch diameter shackle on a 1-3/4 inch wide aluminum body. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock also carries a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, and the Medeco 54515G XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock is listed at 5/16 inch shackle diameter as well. If the hasp opening on your gate or locker was sized around the A10MK shackle, those two will pass through the same hole; the body material differs, brass on the Schlage versus the solid aluminum on the American Lock.
7) I need a padlock rated for electrical lockout on energized equipment. Will the A10MK work?
The A10MK has a solid aluminum body, which is a conductive metal, so it is aimed at self-storage, lockers and manufacturing environments rather than electrical isolation work. For that application the ABUS 74/40 is an insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder, 1/4 inch shackle diameter and 1-1/2 inch body width, and the ABUS 76/40 uses a plastic-covered aluminum core at 1-37/64 inch width. Both put a non-metallic jacket between the hand and the body.
8) The A10MK shackle is too short for my hasp. What padlocks have a longer shackle?
The A10MK shackle clearance is 1-1/8 inch tall with a 3/4 inch shackle width, which suits self-storage doors and locker hasps but not thick staples or chain. The Sargent 60-858-2 carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Sargent 82-856 pairs a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case with a stainless steel shackle. Both give you more vertical clearance than the A10MK.
9) Is an aluminum body padlock good for outdoor or washdown use?
That is what the A10 body is built for. The 1-3/4 inch body is solid aluminum, which does not rust, and the shackle is chrome for added corrosion resistance. It is used in manufacturing environments and on self storage units and lockers. For salt spray or marine exposure specifically, a stainless body such as the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock is a different construction to look at.
10) How many keys come with each A10MK padlock?
Key count is something you specify. The A10MK can be ordered with 0, 1, 2 (standard), 3, or 4 keys per lock. Facilities running a master keyed system often take 0 or 1 change key per lock and keep the masters separate. Pick the count on the order.
11) Can I get the A10MK padlock with a chain attached?
Yes. Each key-count option is available either plain or with a #40 sash chain, 9 inches (229mm) long, zinc plated. The chain keeps the lock tethered to the hasp or locker so it does not get set down and lost, which matters on lockers and gate applications.
12) What is the difference between the American Lock A10, A11 and A12 aluminum padlocks?
They are the same solid aluminum non-rekeyable family, separated by size and shackle. The A10 runs a 1-3/4 inch wide body with a 1-1/8 inch tall, 5/16 inch diameter chrome shackle. The A11 and A12 are the larger members of the same solid aluminum group, each offered in the same four keying styles (keyed different, keyed alike, master keyed, and keyed alike master keyed). If you need more shackle clearance than 1-1/8 inch, move up the family rather than changing series.
13) What is a good alternative if I need a padlock I can rekey or run on interchangeable cores?
The A10MK cannot be rekeyed, so if you want field-serviceable keying look at a core-based padlock instead. The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, which lets a locksmith swap cores rather than replace locks. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass if you want the key captured while the lock is open.
14) Is the A10MK suitable for lockout tagout safety use?
It is a commercial security padlock, not a safety lockout lock. Purpose-built lockout padlocks are typically anodized or insulated for electrical work, such as the ABUS 72/30 anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body and 3/16 inch shackle, or the insulated ABUS 74/40 with a 6-pin cylinder and 1/4 inch shackle. Use those where a LOTO program is in place and keep the A10MK for storage, gate, and locker security.
15) Does the A10MK use the same shackle size as a Schlage KS23 brass padlock?
Both use a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, so they pass through the same hasp staples. The difference is body and keying: the A10MK is a 1-3/4 inch solid aluminum body with a non-rekeyable factory-keyed cylinder, while the Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass body padlock. If your buildings are already standardized on a Schlage key system, the KS23 is the one that keys into it.
16) For a wash-down or marine environment, is the A10MK the right choice or is there something more weather-sealed?
The A10MK is built for corrosive settings with a solid aluminum body and a chrome-plated shackle for corrosion resistance. If the opening is fully exposed or submerged in spray, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body supplied less the pop-out cylinder, and the ABUS T84MB/30 Nautic is a black sleeve padlock with a 13/64 inch shackle and 1-17/64 inch body sized for marine use. The trade is size and cylinder handling rather than corrosion performance alone.
17) Does the A10MK retain the key when unlocked, and what if I need a key-retaining padlock?
The A10MK is keyed and factory master keyed, and its keying options are set at order time rather than in the field. If your procedure requires the key to stay captive in the cylinder while the lock is open, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish. The Sargent 858 is the non-key-retaining counterpart with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 82-856 is also non-key retaining.
18) Is an electronic padlock a drop-in substitute for the American Lock A10MK?
Not a drop-in. The A10MK is a mechanical padlock with a 5-pin APTC12 cylinder that is factory keyed to your master key system, so it opens with a cut key and needs no setup. The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and a cylinder included; it shares the shackle diameter but runs on an electronic credential system rather than your existing mechanical master keying. Use it when you want audit and access scheduling, not when you are matching locks already on a mechanical master key.
19) How are American Lock A10MK padlocks packed for bulk orders?
They come 6 to a shelf pack and 24 to a master carton. For a facility rollout that means ordering in multiples of 6 keeps the packs intact, which is handy when you are distributing locks unit by unit.
