1) Can the American Lock A32MK be rekeyed later if I lose control of the keys?
No. The A32MK uses a non-rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder, so the keying is set at the factory and can't be changed in the field. If a key goes missing you replace the lock, not the cylinder. That's the trade for the pick resistance of a sealed cylinder. If you need a lock whose core can be pulled and swapped by your locksmith, look at an interchangeable/removable core padlock instead, such as the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock.
2) What does the MK in A32MK mean, and how does it differ from A32KD or A32KAMK?
MK means master keyed: each A32MK is keyed different from the next, but all of them open under a common master key you hold. The plain A32 (A32KD) is keyed different with no master above it. A32KA is keyed alike, so one change key opens every lock in the batch. A32KAMK is keyed alike AND under a master. For a property manager or facility running self storage lockers, MK is the usual pick: each tenant gets their own key and maintenance carries one master.
3) How do I standardize padlocks across a whole facility with one master key?
Order the A32MK for the openings that each need their own key, and keep them all under a single factory master group. Because the cylinder is non-rekeyable and factory keyed to your requirements, the keying is established at the order, so place the whole facility on one order or reference the existing master group when you reorder. For openings where a group of people all need the same key (shared equipment cages, shop doors), the A32KAMK is the keyed-alike version under the same master. Same body, same shackle, different keying.
4) Can I put the A32MK on the same key system as my building's door locks?
No. The A32MK is factory keyed on American Lock's own non-rekeyable APTC12 cylinder, so it can't be pinned into a building keyway you already run. If you need padlocks that key into an existing commercial system, you want a padlock built on that manufacturer's cylinder, for example the Sargent 758 key retaining padlock or the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock for a Sargent system, or the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock for a Schlage system. Bring your keyway and system information when you order those.
5) The A32MK cylinder cannot be rekeyed. What padlock takes an interchangeable core instead?
The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. Where the A32MK's cylinder is fixed at the factory and the lock is replaced when the keying changes, the 60-858-2 lets the core come out so the padlock stays on the hasp through a rekey. Note the shackle: the 60-858-2 lists 2 inches against the A32MK's 3 inch shackle length, so on a thick hasp or a chain loop the clearance is not the same.
6) What should I specify instead of the A32MK for an outdoor opening that needs a sealed or stainless body?
The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less the pop-out cylinder. It is a heavier corrosion answer than the A32MK, which handles the elements with a solid aluminum body and a chrome-plated 1/4 inch shackle. The ordering path differs too: the G8R 521 comes without its pop-out cylinder, so the cylinder is specified separately, while the A32MK ships with its 5-pin APTC12 cylinder factory keyed.
7) Is an aluminum body padlock strong enough for an outdoor or washdown environment?
Aluminum is the reason to pick the A32MK for wet or chemically aggressive locations. 12) Is a Sargent 858 a substitute for the American Lock A32MK?
They are not the same lock in hand. The Sargent 858 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in a US4 satin brass finish, so the key comes out with the shackle open and the body is brass-finished rather than the A32MK's grey solid aluminum. Where the A32MK is chosen for a corrosive environment on the strength of its aluminum body and 1/4 inch chrome shackle, the 858 answers a different requirement. Also check retention policy on site: the Sargent 758 is the key-retaining version of that same family, and the A32MK's behavior is not described by either Sargent designation.
13) What padlock has a heavier shackle than the A32MK for a higher-exposure opening?
The A32MK runs a 1/4 inch shackle diameter. If the job calls for more shackle section, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock lists a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, and the Medeco 5260 52 Series brass body padlock in satin chrome lists 7/16 inch. 14) Does an ABUS 76/40 do the same job as the A32MK in a wet or washdown area?
Both put an aluminum core at the middle of the lock and both carry a 1/4 inch shackle diameter, so on hasp fit they are close. The difference is the outer body: the ABUS 76/40 is a plastic-covered aluminum core at 1 37/64 inch width, while the A32MK is a bare solid aluminum body 1-1/2 inches wide with a chrome shackle. The plastic cover on the 76/40 also protects whatever the lock swings against; the A32MK's exposed aluminum does not.
15) Is the Sargent 82-856 KESO padlock an equivalent to the A32MK for a facility standard?
It is a different body class. The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key-retaining KESO padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle, against the A32MK's 1-1/2 inch wide solid aluminum body. The 2 inch by 2 inch brass case needs more room at the hasp than the 1-1/2 inch A32MK, so a fleet swap is not drop-in across existing hardware.
