American Lock AME-A11MK 2KEY – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the A11MK padlock shackle fit through my hasp?
The shackle is 5/16 inch in diameter with a 3/4 inch clearance between the legs and 2 inches of vertical clearance. So the hasp staple opening has to pass a 5/16 inch bar, and anything you are locking through needs to sit inside that 3/4 by 2 inch window. The body itself is 1-3/4 inches wide.
2) What does the MK in American Lock A11MK actually mean for my keying system?
MK means master keyed: each lock is keyed different from the next, but all of them open under a common master key. That is the setup for self-storage and locker banks or a plant where staff carry individual keys and a supervisor carries one key for the whole run. The A11MK is factory keyed to your system under American Lock's Edge key control program. If you want every lock on one key instead, the keyed alike version is the A11KA; keyed different with no master is the A11.
3) What padlock can I use instead of the American Lock A11MK if I need to rekey the lock in the field?
The A11MK uses a non-rekeyable cylinder, so the key combination is set at the factory and cannot be changed on site. If field rekeying or core swapping matters, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, which matches the A11MK's 2 inch shackle length. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish if you want the key captured while the lock is open.
4) For a lockout/tagout program, is the American Lock A11MK the right choice or should I look at a safety padlock?
The A11MK is a commercial solid aluminum body padlock with a non-rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder, built for self-storage units, lockers and manufacturing environments. For a dedicated lockout program, the ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body width and 3/16 inch shackle diameter, and the ABUS 74/40 is an insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder, 1/4 inch shackle diameter and 1-1/2 inch body width. Both are narrower in the body and thinner in the shackle than the A11MK, which is 1-3/4 inches wide with a 5/16 inch shackle.
5) Which other padlock has the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter as the American Lock A11MK?
The A11MK carries a 5/16 inch diameter shackle. Two comparable locks share that shackle diameter: the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass body padlock and the Medeco 54515G XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, which is non-key retaining and supplied with a cylinder. The A11MK differs in body material, using solid aluminum rather than brass, and in cylinder type, using a non-rekeyable mechanical cylinder rather than an electronic one.
6) Is an aluminum body padlock a good choice for a washdown or coastal area?
Yes, that is the point of this one. The A11MK pairs a solid aluminum body, which does not rust, with a zinc plated boron alloy shackle for corrosion resistance, and American Lock calls it out for corrosive environments and manufacturing plants. For a marine or fully weather-exposed application where you want no aluminum at all, a stainless body lock like the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock is the other direction to look.
7) How many keys come with each A11MK padlock, and can I order it with none?
Key count is something you pick when you order. The choices are 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 keys per lock, with 2 keys per lock being the standard. Self-storage operators often take 0 keys per lock when the tenant supplies their own key or the keys ship separately to the office.
8) Can I get the A11MK padlock with a chain attached so it doesn't get lost?
Yes. Along with the plain version, the A11MK can be ordered with a #40 sash chain, 9 inches (229mm) long, zinc plated, so the lock stays tethered to the door, gate, or locker when it is open. The chain option is available with any of the key-count choices.
9) How does the A11MK compare to the A10MK and A12MK?
All three are the same solid aluminum, non-rekeyable master keyed padlock; the difference is shackle height. The A11MK carries a 2 inch shackle, which is the mid length in the group, with the A10MK shorter and the A12MK longer. Pick by how thick the hasp, chain, or door bracket is that the shackle has to clear. Body width stays 1-3/4 inches and shackle diameter 5/16 inch across the set.
10) I need a 5/16 inch shackle padlock but on an existing brass key system. What else is there?
The A11MK's 5/16 inch shackle diameter is shared by the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock, which is the one to look at if you are keying into an existing system rather than taking American Lock's factory keying. The Medeco 54515G XT electronic padlock also uses a 5/16 inch shackle if you want audit trail and credential control instead of mechanical master keying.
11) What holds up better than the American Lock A11MK in salt air or a washdown area?
The A11MK's solid aluminum body is intended for corrosive environments and pairs with a zinc plated boron shackle. If you want a different approach to weather exposure, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder, and the ABUS T84MB/30 Nautic uses a black sleeve over the body with a 13/64 inch shackle diameter and 1-17/64 inch body width. The ABUS 76/40 takes the plastic-covered route over an aluminum core with a 1/4 inch shackle diameter.
12) I need a padlock on a high security keyway, not the American Lock A11MK's factory keying. What are the options?
The A11MK is keyed with a non-rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder factory keyed to your master key requirements. If your facility standardizes on a patented high security key system instead, the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in satin chrome, and the Sargent 82-856 is a KESO series non-key retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. Both are brass bodied rather than the A11MK's aluminum.
13) Does the American Lock A11MK retain the key when the lock is open, and what is the alternative?
For a padlock that stays on the hasp with the key captured, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass. If you prefer the key to come free while the shackle is open, the Sargent 858 is the non-key retaining version with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass finish, and the Medeco 54515G XT is also non-key retaining. The A11MK ships in configurations from 0 to 4 keys per lock, so key count is set at order time rather than by lock function.
14) How do American Lock A11MK padlocks pack for a large facility order?
They come 6 per shelf pack and 24 per master carton, which is convenient when you are rolling out a locker bank or a storage row and want to stage them by building. The finish is grey aluminum, so the whole run will look uniform.
