Metallics JTS42340SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What hole size do I drill for a 1/2 inch wedge anchor like the JTS42340SS?
Wedge anchors are drilled to match the anchor diameter, so a 1/2 inch anchor goes into a 1/2 inch carbide hammer-drill hole in concrete. Drill the hole deeper than the embedment you want, blow it clean, drive the anchor through the fixture, then tighten the nut to expand the clip.
2) Can I use these stainless wedge anchors outdoors or near salt water?
316 stainless is the marine-grade austenitic alloy, with molybdenum added for chloride resistance, which is why it gets specified for coastal, de-iced, pool deck, and wash-down work where zinc-plated anchors rust out. These anchors are 316 throughout, body and clip, so exterior and marine-adjacent concrete is exactly their use case.
3) Are wedge anchors right for hollow block, or do I need something else?
Wedge anchors, including this 1/2 x 2-3/4 Metallics anchor, are for solid concrete only. The clip needs solid material to expand against, so hollow CMU, brick, grout-filled cells with voids, and drywall will not hold it. For hollow block use a sleeve anchor or a toggle-type anchor instead, and for masonry mortar joints use a screw anchor rated for block.
4) Do these Metallics wedge anchors come with nuts and washers?
Yes. Wedge anchors ship as a complete assembly, the threaded stud with the expansion clip, plus a nut and washer already on the threads, so nothing separate is needed to set them. You supply the hammer drill, a 1/2 inch carbide bit, and a wrench.
5) Why pay for 316 stainless instead of zinc-plated wedge anchors?
Three reasons drive it: corrosive or wet environments, dissimilar-metal contact where a plated anchor would sacrifice, and jobs where the spec sheet calls out stainless and an inspector will check. Indoors in dry, conditioned concrete, a plated carbon steel anchor does the same mechanical job. The 316 version earns its place where moisture, chlorides, or chemicals are in play.
6) Can wedge anchors be removed or reused after they are set?
No. Once the nut is tightened and the clip expands against the hole wall, this anchor is permanent. You can back the nut off and remove the fixture, but the anchor body stays. Standard practice is to cut or grind it flush and drill a new hole offset from the old one if the layout has to change, which is a reason to confirm your hole positions before you set a jar of 25.
