Metallics JTS6414D Anchors 3/4 x 4-1/4 Wdg St-zn (Jar 10)

A wedge anchor is drilled with a hammer-drill bit matching the anchor's nominal diameter, so a 3/4 inch anchor takes a 3/4 inch carbide bit. Drill the hole deeper than your intended embedment, blow it clean, then drive the anchor through the fixture until the threads and nut are exposed and torque the nut to expand the clip. With 4-1/4 inches of overall length, part of that is consumed by the thickness of the item being fastened, so account for your fixture thickness when setting embedment.

Wedge anchors are a solid-concrete anchor. They work by a steel expansion clip wedging against the wall of the drilled hole, which needs the uniform compressive strength of poured concrete. Hollow block, brick, mortar joints, and grout-filled cells do not give that resistance reliably. For hollow masonry or block, use a sleeve anchor or a screw-type masonry anchor instead of this wedge anchor.

A wedge anchor of this type ships as a complete assembly: the threaded stud with the expansion clip, plus the nut and washer already run onto the threads, which is what you torque to set it. Nothing else is needed to install it beyond a 3/4 inch carbide hammer-drill bit, a blow-out bulb or vacuum to clear the hole, and a wrench.

Zinc plating on the JTS6414D is a light corrosion coating meant for dry interior service: equipment pads, machine bases, strut and pipe supports, electrical gear anchored to an interior slab. In standing water, exterior exposure, chemical rooms, or anywhere chlorides are present, the plating sacrifices quickly and you should specify a stainless wedge anchor instead.

Once set, a wedge anchor is permanent. Torquing the nut drives the cone into the expansion clip and locks it against the concrete, so the body cannot be withdrawn. You can remove the nut and the fixture, but the stud stays in the slab. If you need a bolt you can take out and put back, use a female anchor such as a drop-in or an internally threaded insert instead.

At 3/4 inch diameter this is the heavy end of the wedge anchor range, used where the load justifies it: floor-mounted switchgear and transformer bases, generator and motor pads, large trapeze and strut supports for heavy conduit runs, and equipment frames bolted to a slab. For strut channel, small conduit clamps, or box mounting you would step well down in diameter, since a 3/4 inch hole in a slab is a lot of drilling for a light fixture.
