Metallics TS6614SSD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What drill bit size do I need for a 3/4 inch wedge anchor like the TS6614SSD?
A wedge anchor is drilled with a carbide bit matching the anchor's nominal diameter, so a 3/4 inch bit for the TS6614SSD. The hole must go deeper than the embedment you want so drilling dust can settle below the anchor, and the hole has to be blown clean before you drive the anchor or the clip won't set properly.
2) Can I use the Metallics TS6614SSD wedge anchor in block or brick, or is it concrete only?
Wedge anchors are designed for solid, poured concrete. The expansion clip needs continuous solid material around the hole to grip, which hollow block and brick with voids don't provide. For CMU or brick, use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor rated for masonry instead of the 3/4 x 6-1/4 wedge.
3) Is a stainless wedge anchor worth it over zinc plated for outdoor or wet locations?
Yes, and that is the reason to pick the TS6614SSD. The stainless body resists corrosion in exterior, washdown, coastal, and damp below-grade work where a zinc plated carbon steel anchor will rust at the thread line and bleed stain down the concrete. For dry interior anchoring, plated carbon steel does the same mechanical job.
4) How much thickness can a 6-1/4 inch long wedge anchor hold down?
At 6-1/4 inches overall, the TS6614SSD gives you length for a deep embedment plus the fixture. Whatever you clamp (base plate, sill, channel, equipment foot) plus the nut and washer comes off that total, and the rest is embedment into the concrete. On thick base plates or grouted bases the long 6-1/4 inch body is what keeps enough anchor in the slab.
5) Should I use stainless washers and nuts with the TS6614SSD anchor?
The TS6614SSD ships as a stainless wedge anchor with its nut and washer. Don't swap in plated carbon steel hardware on it, mixing metals at an outdoor connection sets up galvanic corrosion and defeats the reason you bought stainless.
6) Can a 3/4 inch wedge anchor be removed or reused later?
No. Once a wedge anchor is driven and torqued, the clip is expanded against the hole wall and it won't come back out. You can back the nut off and either cut the stud flush or drive it below the surface and patch. Plan the TS6614SSD as a permanent fastening and order the box of 20 with a few spares for misplaced holes.
