Metallics J1203 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What base material are lag screw shields like the Metallics J1203 meant for?
Lag shields are masonry anchors. They go into a drilled hole in concrete, block, brick, or stone, and the lag screw expands the shield against the hole wall as it drives. They are not for drywall, wood, or hollow partitions. For electrical work that means strut, backboards, pipe straps, panel enclosures, and transformer or fixture mounting onto a concrete wall, slab, or ceiling.
2) Does the J1203 lag shield come with the lag screws?
No. The J1203 jar is shields only, 50 of them. You order 3/8 inch lag screws separately and size the length for the 1-3/4 inch shield depth plus the material being fastened. You also need a carbide masonry bit matched to the shield's outside diameter, since the hole has to be drilled to the shield size and not to the screw size.
3) Is the Metallics J1203 shield zinc plated steel or something more corrosion resistant?
It is a zinc-aluminum alloy shield, not plated steel. The alloy body resists corrosion through the whole part rather than relying on a surface plating, which matters in damp mechanical rooms, parking structures, and exterior concrete. The lag screw you drive into it is a separate purchase, so match the screw's finish to the exposure.
4) Should I use a lag shield or a wedge anchor for mounting to concrete?
Use a lag shield like the J1203 when you want a removable fastener: back the lag out and the item comes off, with the shield staying in the hole for reuse. That suits equipment, panels, and strut that may be serviced or relocated. A wedge anchor is a one-shot structural anchor, higher capacity but not removable, and it is the choice where a drawing calls out a specific anchor for a load. Lag shields also tolerate shallower embedment, which helps in block where the web is thin.
5) Will the J1203 work in hollow block, or do I need a solid pour?
It works in both solid concrete and the solid webbing of block, as long as the drilled hole stays in solid material for the full 1-3/4 inches of shield length. Drill into a hollow cell and the shield has nothing to expand against, so it will spin. Lay out into mortar joints or the block web, or switch to a toggle-type anchor for the hollow cells.
6) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics J1203?
Fifty shields per jar. They ship in a jar rather than a box, which is the format most electrical contractors buy for truck stock since the lid reseals and the shields do not spill in a gang box.
