Metallics JTS5412 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What base material is a 5/8 x 4-1/2 wedge anchor meant for?
Wedge anchors like the Metallics JTS5412 are for solid concrete only. They work by expanding a clip against the wall of a drilled hole, so they need the compressive strength of poured concrete. Hollow block, brick, mortar joints and grout will not hold them reliably, use a sleeve or screen-tube type anchor there instead.
2) What size hole do I drill for a 5/8 inch wedge anchor?
A 5/8 inch wedge anchor like the JTS5412 takes a 5/8 inch carbide hammer-drill bit, drilled to match the anchor's nominal diameter. Drill deeper than your intended embedment so the hole can take dust, and clean the hole before setting.
3) How thick a fixture can I fasten with the 4-1/2 inch length?
The 4-1/2 inch overall length of the JTS5412 has to cover your fixture thickness, the washer and nut, plus the embedment left in the concrete. A 5/8 inch anchor needs a meaningful portion of that length buried, so a 4-1/2 inch body suits plate, angle and equipment bases on the order of an inch or so thick. For thicker standoffs or shim stacks, step up to a longer 5/8 inch anchor rather than reducing embedment.
4) Will the zinc plating on these anchors hold up outdoors?
The JTS5412 is steel with zinc plating, which suits dry interior and sheltered work such as strut, panel and equipment anchoring. Zinc plating is a light sacrificial coating, not a marine or chemical finish, so for permanently wet, coastal or washdown locations specify a stainless or hot dip galvanized 5/8 inch wedge anchor instead.
5) Is this the right anchor for hanging strut, conduit racks and electrical gear off concrete?
Yes. The JTS5412 is an electrical-trade fastener, a 5/8 inch wedge anchor used for securing strut channel, cable tray supports, transformer and panel bases and similar equipment to concrete floors, walls and decks. The 25 piece jar covers a typical rack run without buying a full case.
6) Can a wedge anchor be removed or reused once it is set?
No. Once the clip on a 5/8 inch wedge anchor like the JTS5412 is expanded, the body stays in the concrete. The nut and washer come off and the stud can be cut flush, but the anchor is not retrievable or reusable. If you need a removable fastening, use a female anchor such as a drop-in or an internally threaded concrete anchor and a machine bolt.
