Metallics J6256 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What hole size do I drill for a 5/8 inch sleeve anchor?
Sleeve anchors are drilled at the same nominal diameter as the anchor, so a 5/8 inch anchor like the J6256 goes into a 5/8 inch carbide hole in concrete, block or brick. Drill deeper than the embedment you need so dust can settle below the anchor, blow the hole clean, then set the anchor and tighten the nut to expand the sleeve.
2) Should I use a sleeve anchor or a wedge anchor for mounting into concrete block?
Sleeve anchors like the 5/8 x 6 J6256 expand along the length of the sleeve, which spreads the load and makes them the better choice in hollow block, brick and softer masonry. Wedge anchors grip at a single point near the bottom of the hole and are generally reserved for solid poured concrete. If the base material is block, go sleeve.
3) How thick a fixture can I mount with a 6 inch long sleeve anchor?
The 6 inch overall length of the J6256 is split between embedment in the masonry and the thickness of whatever you are fastening, plus the nut and washer. Add up your fixture thickness and any shim or standoff, subtract it from 6 inches, and what is left is your embedment depth. Heavy equipment bases, strut racks and panel backing in masonry walls are the usual uses for a 5/8 inch anchor this long.
4) Are zinc plated steel anchors suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
Zinc plated steel, which is what the J6256 sleeve anchors are, is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior service and protected exterior use. For wet, coastal or chemically aggressive locations, specify stainless anchors instead rather than relying on zinc plating.
5) How many anchors are in a jar of Metallics J6256, and is that enough for one equipment base?
Each jar holds 10 of the 5/8 x 6 anchors with nuts. That typically covers two to three four-bolt bases, so order by the number of holes on your drawing rather than by the fixture count.
