Metallics J1564 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size spring wing toggle bolt is the Metallics J1564, and what hole does it need?
The J1564 is a 3/16 inch spring wing toggle bolt with a #10 machine screw and a 3 inch length. The wings fold flat to pass through the drilled hole and spring open behind the board, so the hole has to be large enough for the folded wing to clear, not just the 3/16 inch screw. Drill the hole, fold the wings, push them through until you hear them snap open, then pull back on the bolt head while you tighten.
2) Can I use a 3/16 inch toggle bolt in drywall, or do I need a solid-wall anchor?
A spring wing toggle like the J1564 is for hollow construction only, drywall, plaster and lath, or hollow block, where there is open cavity behind the material for the wings to swing out into. In solid concrete, brick or grouted block there is no cavity, the wings cannot open, and you need a sleeve, wedge or screw anchor instead. Also confirm the cavity is deep enough to let a 3/16 inch wing rotate fully clear of the back face.
3) How many toggle bolts come in a jar of Metallics J1564?
Fifty pieces, supplied in a jar rather than a carded pack. That is the quantity an electrician or maintenance crew wants on the truck for repeated hollow-wall mounting work, since toggles get consumed one per fixture point.
4) Will the toggle stay in the wall if I remove the screw later?
No. On any spring wing toggle, including the J1564, the wings are captive on the screw only while it is threaded in. Back the #10 screw all the way out and the toggle drops into the cavity, and you cannot retrieve it. If you need to take the fixture down and reuse the hole, use a toggle-style anchor that stays anchored on its own, or plan on installing a fresh toggle.
5) Is the Metallics J1564 the right fastener for hanging electrical boxes and light fixtures on a hollow wall?
It is an electrical-trade anchor, and the 3/16 inch #10 toggle size is the common choice for fixture boxes, raceway, small strut and surface-mount devices on hollow walls or ceilings. Keep in mind that for overhead work the load hangs in tension on the wings, so spread the load across more than one toggle wherever the fixture allows multiple mounting points.
