1) Will a spring wing toggle bolt work in drywall or will I need a different anchor?
Spring wing toggle bolts like the J1543 are made for hollow substrates: drywall, hollow block, plaster and lath, hollow metal. The wings fold flat to pass through the drilled hole, then spring open behind the wall and clamp against the back face when you tighten the 5/16-18 screw. For solid concrete or brick you want a wedge or sleeve anchor instead, since there is no cavity for the wings to open into.
2) How many toggle bolts come in a Metallics J1543 pack?
They ship 25 to a jar. That is the standard put-up for the J1543, so an electrician stocking a van or a maintenance shop restocking a bin is buying in units of 25 rather than loose pieces.
3) What do I need to know before drilling for a 5/16 toggle bolt?
Two things. The hole has to be large enough for the folded wings to pass, which is noticeably bigger than the 5/16 inch screw itself, and you need clear cavity depth behind the wall for the wings to swing open. Also set the fixture on the bolt before you push the toggle through, because once the wings are inside the wall you cannot back the screw out without losing the toggle.
4) Is the Metallics J1543 long enough to hang strut or a box off a thick wall?
At 6 inches of screw length, the J1543 covers a lot of standoff: the wall material, the channel or box flange, and any spacers in between, with thread left to engage the toggle. If your total stack-up is under an inch or two, a shorter toggle is easier to work with, since the surplus length just has to be fed through the hole.
