Metallics J1517 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What kind of wall can I use the Metallics J1517 spring wing toggle in?
Spring wing toggles like the J1517 are for hollow wall and ceiling work: drywall, plaster and lath, hollow block, and hollow metal. The wings fold against the bolt, pass through a drilled hole, then spring open and bear on the back face of the material. You need open cavity behind the hole for the wings to deploy, so this is not an anchor for solid concrete or filled block.
2) How many toggle bolts come in a jar of Metallics J1517?
They ship 25 to a jar. That is the standard pack for the J1517, so an electrician stocking a van or a maintenance shop buying for a hanging job gets a full jar rather than loose pieces.
3) Will a 5 inch toggle bolt work in 5/8 inch drywall, or is it too long?
A 5 inch bolt length on the J1517 is sized for thick assemblies or for standing the fixture off the wall. Remember the usable grip is the bolt length minus the wall thickness and whatever you are hanging, so in single layer drywall a 5 inch bolt leaves a lot of thread sticking into the cavity. That is fine mechanically, but if you need the bolt flush, step down to a shorter length in the same 5/16-18 thread.
4) Do I need to drill an oversized hole for the J1517 toggle?
Yes. The hole has to clear the folded wings, not just the 5/16 inch bolt, so it is noticeably larger than the bolt diameter. Fold the wings flat along the bolt and use that as your gauge when picking a bit. The fixture being hung also needs a clearance hole big enough to pass the folded wings, since the toggle has to go through the part before it goes through the wall.
5) Can the wings be reused if I take the fixture back down?
No. Once you back the 5/16-18 bolt out of a spring wing toggle, the wing assembly drops into the wall cavity and is gone. Plan on a fresh toggle from the jar for any re-install, which is one reason the J1517 is sold 25 to a jar.
6) Is the Metallics J1517 driven with a screwdriver or a nut driver?
Screwdriver. It is a round head, slotted bolt, so a flat blade is what you want. Keep tension pulling the toggle back against the wall while you drive, otherwise the wings spin instead of tightening.
