The Appleton EYF Series is a 25% fill vertical and horizontal conduit sealing fitting engineered to prevent the passage of gases, vapors, or flames from one portion of a conduit system to another. 1) What trade sizes does the Appleton EYF sealing fitting come in, and which ones are aluminum?
The EYF Series covers 3/4 inch through 1-1/2 inch trade sizes. The malleable iron versions are EYF-100 (1 inch), EYF-125 (1-1/4 inch) and EYF-150 (1-1/2 inch). Aluminum bodies come in 3/4 inch (EYF75-AL) and 1 inch (EYF100-AL). So if you need 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inch, you are ordering the iron body; if you need 3/4 inch, you are ordering aluminum.
2) Can one EYF fitting be used on both a vertical and a horizontal conduit run?
Yes. The removable nipple in the male sealing fitting can go in either the top or the bottom hub, which is what lets the same close-radius body serve a vertical drop or a horizontal run. You are not buying a separate horizontal-only part.
3) Where does the NEC require a seal like the Appleton EYF, and will these fittings satisfy it?

Both. The EYF is rated Class I, Division 1 and 2, Groups A, B, C and D for gases and vapors, Class II, Division 1 and 2, Groups E, F and G for combustible dusts, and Class III. Construction is explosionproof, dust-ignitionproof and raintight, so one fitting covers a grain or coal dust area as well as a solvent or hydrocarbon area.
6) Should I spec the malleable iron or the aluminum body EYF for a chemical plant?
The malleable iron bodies carry a triple-coat finish of zinc electroplate, chromate and epoxy powder coat. The Almag 35 aluminum bodies are epoxy powder coated. Aluminum is the lighter body and is common where copper-free alloy is preferred around certain process chemistry; iron is the heavier, higher-strength body. Both are offered in 1 inch, so that size is a straight material choice.
7) Will the EYF thread directly into my rigid conduit run without damaging conductor insulation?
The hubs are accurately tapped with tapered threads, which is what gives a tight, rigid joint and maintains ground continuity through the raceway. Each hub also has a smooth, rounded integral bushing so the conductors are not cut as they pass through. It threads into standard tapered rigid conduit thread.
8) What does the 25% fill rating on the Appleton EYF mean for how many conductors I can pull?
The EYF is a 25 percent fill sealing fitting, meaning the sealed chamber is sized for conductors occupying up to 25 percent of the cross-sectional area of the conduit. If your pull is heavier than that for the trade size, you need a higher-fill sealing fitting rather than this one.
