1) What's the difference between the Arlington LVD2 and LVDR2 2-gang low-voltage boxes?
Construction type. The LVD2 is the new-construction version, meant to go in before the wall is closed up. The LVDR2 is the retrofit version for existing walls, where you're cutting into finished drywall on an occupied unit. Same 2-gang combination power and low-voltage box either way, same black plastic, same UL listing. Pick by whether the wall is open.
2) Can I run line voltage and data cable in the same Arlington LVD2 box without violating separation rules?
That is what the box exists for. The Arlington LVD/LVDR is a combination box built so a power receptacle and a phone, cable, or fiber optic outlet mount together in one 2-gang opening, with the two sides kept apart inside the box. You get one wall penetration and one plate location instead of two boxes side by side. Standard 2-gang trade size, so it takes ordinary 2-gang device plates.
3) I'm adding an internet drop next to an existing outlet in a finished wall. Which Arlington box do I order?
The LVDR2. The R version is the existing-construction box, built to go into drywall that's already up, so you cut the opening and mount without opening the wall or getting behind a stud. Order the LVD2 only if you're roughing in before board goes on. Both give you the power side and the low-voltage side in one 2-gang opening.
4) Is a plastic low-voltage box OK for a commercial office fit-out, or do I need metal?
The Arlington LVD/LVDR is plastic, non-metallic, which is the normal choice on wood-stud residential and light commercial work and carries a UL listing. Where your spec or local amendment calls for metallic boxes on the branch circuit, or you're in metal stud with MC cable and bonding the box, a non-metallic box won't satisfy that. Check the drawing before you buy 25 of them.
5) How many Arlington LVDR2 boxes come in a pack?
They ship 25 to a box. For a property manager doing a unit-by-unit data upgrade, that's roughly one floor of a small building per pack. If you only need two or three, you're still buying the 25-piece pack.
6) Does the Arlington 2-gang combination box come in white or ivory to match my devices?
Black is the only color. That rarely matters, since the box sits in the wall and the device plate you choose sets the visible color. Order your cover plate in white, ivory, or whatever the rest of the unit runs.
