Arrow 17-03-2 26D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Entrance/Dormitory function on the Arrow 17-03-2 actually do at the door?
It is a single cylinder lock with a separate deadbolt. The key retracts the deadbolt from outside, and the inside lever or thumbturn side controls locking, so you get a latch for everyday use plus a throw deadbolt for positive security on a dorm room, apartment, or office entrance.
2) Is the Arrow BM Series mortise lock fire rated for a 3-hour opening?
Yes. The BM Series is UL and cUL listed for doors rated up to 3 hours, and both UL and ULC listings are carried. It also meets ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and A156.41, and it is ADA and ICC A117.1 compliant, which covers the usual institutional spec for lever operation.
3) Do I have to order the Arrow 17-03-2 handed, or can I flip it on site?
Order it either way and fix the hand in the field. The lockset is field reversible and can be re-handed without opening the lock case, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. That is useful when you are stocking spares for a building with mixed handing.
4) Will the 1 inch latchbolt throw on this Arrow mortise lock work with my existing ANSI strike?
The latchbolt throws 1 inch and the lock is set up for ANSI strikes in either curved lip or straight lip. If your frame already has a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch mortise strike prep from another Grade 1 mortise lock, the geometry lines up. Curved lip is the usual choice on a frame where the stop is set back; straight lip suits a flush condition.
5) Can the Arrow 17-03-2 be keyed into a master key system we already run?
Yes, and it does not have to be an Arrow system. The BM Series can be keyed into new or existing Arrow or competitive master key systems, and it accepts either conventional cylinders or small format interchangeable core. Two keys come with the lock.
6) Should I use a mortise lock like this or a cylindrical lock with a separate deadbolt?
A mortise lock puts the latch and the deadbolt in one case inside the door edge, so you bore one mortise pocket instead of two cross bores and you get a single trim set. The BM Series is aimed at schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings where the traffic is heavy and maintenance needs to stay low. A cylindrical lock plus a separate deadbolt is the cheaper retrofit when the door is already bored for one and you do not want to cut a mortise pocket.
7) What finishes does the Arrow 17-03-2 rose trim come in?
Two: 612 satin bronze and 626 satin chrome. 626 is the common match for institutional openings already running satin chrome levers and exit trim; 612 suits bronze hardware schedules. The trim is the L rose design, and Arrow offers matching designs across their cylindrical locks and exit device trims if you are standardizing a building.
8) Is the rose trim on this Arrow mortise lock throughbolted, and does that matter for install?
It is throughbolted, and it matters on two counts: alignment and security, since the trim cannot be pulled off the outside. The rose trim is also self aligning as standard, which takes the bind out of setting the spindle and cuts install labor on a run of doors.
