Arrow RK11-BD-32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow RK11 entrance knob lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or is it 1-3/4 only?
Both. The RK11 covers 1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, which takes in older interior wood doors and standard commercial leaves without a thickness kit. It goes into a standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore, so if the door is already prepped for a cylindrical lock the hole is right.
2) What backset does the Arrow RK11 come with, and can I get it for a 2-3/4 inch backset door prep?
The RK11 ships standard with the R70 deadlatch on a 2-3/8 inch backset, and Arrow also builds the RK Series for 2-3/4 inch backset. Those are the two backsets used on bored door preps, so measure from the door edge to the center of the 2-1/8 inch hole before ordering. The latch front changes with the backset: 1 x 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/8 inch latch, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/4 inch one.
3) How does the turn-button entrance function on the Arrow RK11 actually work day to day?
Knob turns from either side to retract the latch until someone presses the turn-button on the inside knob. With the button set, the outside knob is locked and opens only with the key; the inside knob always turns free to get out. The button does not release when the door is opened or when the inside knob is turned, so a tenant has to walk back and pop it manually. That is what makes it an office/entrance lock rather than a storeroom lock, where the outside is locked all the time.
4) Is the Arrow RK11 handed? I need to know before I order for a left-hand door.
Non-handed. One RK11 works on a left or right hand door, in-swing or out-swing, with no field reversing. For a property manager buying a dozen at once that means one part number covers every opening in the building.
5) Will the Arrow RK11 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 1/2 inch, which is standard for a bored lock, so it will engage an existing cylindrical-lock strike lip at the same height. The RK11 ships with the R60 T-strike at 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 inches. If your frame is cut for the 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike or a 2-1/4 inch full lip strike, Arrow builds the RK Series for those too, so match the strike to the frame cutout rather than repatching the jamb.
6) Can I get the Arrow RK11 keyed to my existing Schlage C keys?
Yes, order the CS cylinder option and the RK11 comes with a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, so it drops onto an existing C-keyed system. Arrow's own A keyway is the standard build. Four cylinder choices in all: standard conventional, CS Schlage C, IC for a small format interchangeable core (core sold separately, the lock comes less core), and LC less cylinder entirely.
7) I'm doing 20 apartment doors and want them all on one key. Can the RK11 be keyed alike?
Keying is a required selection on the RK11: keyed different, keyed alike, or none if you are taking a less-cylinder or SFIC build. Pick keyed alike and the whole run opens on one key, and there is a key code field if the units have to match an existing system on file. Two brass keys come with each lock.
8) The RK11 is Grade 2. What is the heavier-duty knob lock for a high-traffic entrance?
For an opening that needs more than Grade 2, the BEST 8K Series entrance-function knob lock is Grade 1 heavy duty with a single cylinder, in the same entrance function as the Arrow RK11. The Corbin Russwin CK4851 is likewise a Grade 1 entrance/office cylindrical knob lock with a conventional cylinder and covers doors up to 2 inch thick. The RK11 stays at Grade 2, ANSI/BHMA F109, which is the level specified for multi-family and light commercial entrance doors.
9) What is the closest equivalent to the Arrow RK11 entrance knob lock from another brand?
The Dexter C2000 Series entry/office cylindrical ball knob lock is the nearest match. Both are Grade 2 keyed cylindrical knob locks in the entrance/office function, both use a ball knob, and both fit doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Corbin Russwin CK4851 is also an entrance/office cylindrical knob lock with a conventional cylinder, using the Global knob and covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Where the RK11 differs from both is cylinder choice: it can be ordered with the Arrow A keyway, a Schlage C keyway, an SFIC housing less core, or less cylinder entirely.
10) I need a knob lock that stays locked and cannot be left unlocked by a pushbutton. What should I use instead of the RK11?
Use a storeroom function instead. The Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is the Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet version with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Arrow RK11 is an entrance/office function: the outside knob is locked by a turn-button inside and the button must be manually released, so a tenant or staff member can leave the door unlocked. On a storage or utility room where the outside must always require the key, the storeroom function removes that possibility.
11) Do I need to buy anything else to install the Arrow RK11, or is the latch and strike in the box?
It comes as a complete lockset: knobs both sides, the R70 deadlatch on a 2-3/8 inch backset, the R60 T-strike, wood and machine screws, and two keys. The one thing to watch is the cylinder option. If you order IC, the lock comes less core and you supply the small format core; if you order LC it comes less cylinder entirely. Standard and CS builds arrive with the cylinder in place.
12) Should I use an entrance knob like the RK11 or a storeroom function on my utility and equipment rooms?
Storeroom, not the RK11. With the RK11 the turn-button can be left pushed in or popped out, so a door can be walked away from unlocked. A storeroom lock keeps the outside knob locked at all times and opens only by key, with the inside always free to exit, which is what you want on an electrical or janitor closet. The Sargent 6G04 is the Grade 2 storeroom knob lock, and the 8XG04 is the Grade 1 version on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Keep the RK11 on tenant unit doors and offices, where someone is meant to control the lock.
13) Can I use the Arrow RK11 on a bedroom or bathroom door?
It will fit the door, but it is the wrong function. The RK11 is keyed with a cylinder on the outside, which is not what you want on a bath. Use a privacy set that locks from the inside with an emergency release instead: the Dexter C2000 privacy ball knob is the same Grade 2 and same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch range, and the Cal-Royal BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy knob on the same thickness range.
14) Which knob locks carry a fire rating if the RK11 will not work on my rated opening?
The Falcon W101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical knob lock in the passage/closet latch function with a 2-3/4 inch backset and is fire rated. The Falcon X101 is the Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with an interchangeable core, also fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Both are passage functions rather than the keyed entrance/office function the Arrow RK11 provides, so match the function to the opening before substituting.
15) Is there a lower-grade keyed entrance knob than the Arrow RK11 for a light-use door?
Yes. The Cal-Royal BER00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office knob lock with a Kwikset keyway for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Pamex FTF Baron is a Grade 3 entrance/office knob lockset over the same door thickness range. The Kwikset 400P-CP Polo is a Grade 3 keyed entry knob, also 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Arrow RK11 sits a grade above all three at Grade 2 and is offered with the Arrow A keyway, Schlage C keyway, SFIC less core, or less cylinder.
16) What is the difference between the Arrow RK11 and a classroom function knob lock?
The Dexter C2000 classroom cylindrical ball knob lock is keyed and Grade 2 like the Arrow RK11 and fits the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, but the classroom function is locked and unlocked by key from the outside only. The RK11 entrance/office function locks the outside knob with a turn-button on the inside, and the key outside or turning the inside knob retracts the latch when it is locked. Pick by who controls the lock state: the RK11 puts it on the room side, the classroom function keeps it on the key.
17) I ordered a knob lock that looks like the RK11 but it has no keyway. What did I get?
Most likely a passage, privacy, or dummy knob in a similar ball or round trim. The Dexter C2000 passage knob and the Dexter C2000 privacy knob are both Grade 2, non-keyed, and share the 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door range. The Corbin Russwin CK4410 is a Grade 2 non-keyed passage/closet knob. The BEST 6K single dummy trim has no latch at all. The Arrow RK11 is keyed with a single cylinder, so if the door needs a key it is not interchangeable with any of these.
18) Can I use a Baldwin or Emtek knob in place of the Arrow RK11 on an apartment entry door?
They are different products. The Baldwin Estate 5000 Baltimore knob is a passage lock and the Baldwin Estate 5077 Bethpage is a privacy knob, neither keyed. Emtek's Classic Brass Crystal Georgetown and Providence knobsets are dummy pairs, which are trim only. The Arrow RK11 is a keyed single-cylinder entrance/office lock at Grade 2 with a UL listed guarded deadlatch. For a unit entry door that has to take a key, the decorative passage, privacy, and dummy knobs will not serve the same purpose.
19) I need a keyless entrance knob for a door where staff cannot carry keys. What replaces the RK11?
The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function, covering doors 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch. It takes a code rather than a key, so there is nothing to issue or rekey. The Arrow RK11 is a keyed single-cylinder lock with a 6 pin solid brass cylinder in the Arrow A keyway, or a Schlage CS keyway, and is the choice where the opening has to key into an existing system.
20) Is a Schlage A170 the same kind of part as the Arrow RK11?
No. The Schlage A170 is single dummy trim, a Grade 2 non-keyed knob for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch, with no latch and no key. The Arrow RK11 is a working keyed cylindrical lock with a brass deadlatch, an R70 deadlatch at 2-3/8 inch backset and an R60 T-strike as standard. They are often confused because the trim looks alike on the door, but only the RK11 latches and locks.
21) I am standardizing a building on small format interchangeable core. Which knob locks take SFIC besides the Arrow RK11?
The Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage knobset supplied with an interchangeable core. The Arrow RK11 can be ordered as IC - SFIC Less Core, so the cores are supplied and keyed by the facility rather than shipping with the lock, and it can also be taken as LC - Conventional Less Cylinder if the existing conventional cylinders are being reused.
22) How far does the Arrow RK11 knob stick out from the door, and how big is the rose?
Projection from the door face is 2-3/4 inches, on a wrought brass rose 2-1/2 inches in diameter. That matters where a door swings back against a wall or into a tight corridor, and the 2-1/2 inch rose is worth checking against the old lock's footprint if you are replacing a knob that left a wear ring or an unpainted circle on the door.
23) I need the Arrow RK11 to match brass hardware already in the building. What finishes are there?
Six finishes across the RK11: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed satin bronze, 629 bright stainless, and 630 satin stainless. Every one of them is available with any of the four cylinder options, so a keyway choice never limits the finish. 630 satin stainless is the usual spec for commercial corridors, 606 satin brass for older residential stock.
24) Will the Arrow RK11 hold up in a coastal or damp location like an exterior corridor?
The chassis is cold rolled steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance, and the latchbolt is brass with a guard against carding. That is built for a covered exterior corridor or a stairwell. For salt exposure, the 630 satin stainless or 629 bright stainless trim will weather better than the brass finishes.
25) Can I put the Arrow RK11 on a fire-rated door?
The latch on the RK11 is UL Listed, and it is a guarded deadlatch on all locking functions. For an opening under a fire label, check the door and frame label for what it will accept and confirm the assembly with your inspector. If you need a knob lock we hold with a fire rating on record, the Falcon W101 Grade 2 and the Falcon X101 Grade 1 both carry one, though both are passage function with no key.
26) What Grade 2 entrance knobsets are there besides the Arrow RK11 if I want a different look?
The Callan Edgewood and the Callan Roland are both Grade 2 entrance knobsets, the Roland in a US15 satin nickel finish. The Dexter C2000 entry/office is a Grade 2 keyed ball knob. The Arrow RK11 uses a ball knob on a wrought brass 2-1/2 inch diameter rose and is offered in bright brass, satin brass, satin bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, bright stainless, and satin stainless.
