Arrow MK11-BD-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset does the Arrow MK Series knob lock come with, and can I get it for a wide-stile or unusual door?
2-3/8 inch is the standard backset on the MK Series, with 2-3/4 inch, 3-3/4 inch and 5 inch also available. The 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 options cover almost every standard door; the 3-3/4 and 5 inch backsets are what you order when the bore sits farther off the door edge. The latch supplied as standard is the 114 deadlatch at 2-3/4 inch backset, so specify the backset you actually need when you order.
2) Will an Arrow MK11 latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
The latch throws 1/2 inch, so it needs a strike with a pocket deep enough to take that. The standard strike shipped is a 300 T-strike measuring 2-3/4 by 1-1/8 inches; an ANSI A115.1 strike at 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches is the option if your frame is already ANSI prepped. Both carry a 1-1/4 inch lip-to-center. If your existing frame has a full ANSI cutout, order the A115.1 strike rather than trying to reuse the T-strike.
3) How does the turn-button entrance function on the Arrow MK11 actually work day to day?
Push the inside turn button and the outside knob locks; the inside knob always retracts the deadlocking latch, so nobody gets trapped. Turning the key outside or simply operating the inside knob pops the button back out and unlocks the outside knob. If you rotate the button rather than just pushing it, it stays locked and operating the inside knob will not release it. That is the difference that matters in an office suite: rotate it when you want the door to stay locked after someone leaves for the day.
4) Can I key an Arrow MK11 into my existing Schlage C keyway master key system?
Yes. The MK11 is offered with a CS conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway alongside the standard Arrow A keyway cylinder. The standard cylinder is solid brass, 6 pin, keyed to 5 pin for stock and supplied with two brass keys, and it can be masterkeyed, grandmaster keyed or construction masterkeyed. If you run small format interchangeable cores, order the IC option, which ships less core so you can drop in your own; LC ships less cylinder entirely.
5) Is a Grade 2 knob lock enough for my building, or should I be buying Grade 1?
Grade 2 is the medium duty tier and it suits commercial openings where heavy duty Grade 1 hardware is not required: offices, tenant suites, back-of-house doors, multi-family common areas. Where the door sees constant public traffic or abuse, step up to Grade 1. From what ZenSupply carries, the BEST 8K Series entrance knob lock is the Grade 1 heavy duty equivalent in entrance function, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is another Grade 1 entrance/office cylindrical knob lock, listed for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors.
6) Is a Grade 3 entrance knob lock an equivalent to the Arrow MK11?
They share the function but not the grade. The Cal-Royal BER00 is a Grade 3 Entrance/Office knob lock with a Kwikset keyway, and the Pamex FTF Baron is a Grade 3 Entrance/Office knob lockset; both fit 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The MK11 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 2 and is UL listed for 3 hour, A label or lesser doors, so on a fire rated or graded commercial opening the Grade 3 knobs are a different specification, not a swap. Keyway matters too: the MK11 ships with an Arrow A keyway cylinder and is also offered with a Schlage C keyway, while the BER00 uses a Kwikset keyway.
7) What should I use instead of an Arrow MK11 on a high-traffic opening that needs Grade 1?
Step up to a Grade 1 heavy duty knob lock. The BEST 8K Series is an entrance function single cylinder Grade 1 heavy duty knob lock, which keeps the keyed entrance behavior while moving to the higher grade. The Corbin Russwin CK4851 is a Grade 1 Entrance/Office cylindrical knob lock with a conventional cylinder and a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness range. The MK11 itself is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 2, which the MK Series describes as suited to commercial applications where heavy duty Grade 1 hardware is not necessary.
8) The MK11 turn button unlocks when the door is opened from inside - what do I use on a door that must stay locked outside at all times?
Use a storeroom function lock. The MK11 function has the outside knob locked by pushing the inside turn button, and a key outside or turning the inside knob releases the turn button and unlocks the outside knob unless the button has been rotated. That release-on-egress behavior is what a storeroom lock avoids: the Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 standard duty storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet single cylinder knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is one of the backsets the MK Series offers.
9) The door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - which knob lock covers it?
The Arrow MK11 fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors as standard. For a thicker leaf, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage knobset with an interchangeable core that covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 Entrance/Office cylindrical knob with conventional cylinder covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch while keeping the keyed entrance function. Deltana's 3381 Egg Knob entry and 6171 Round Knob entry also cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch.
10) Is a Kwikset 400P Polo entry knob the same thing as an Arrow MK11?
They are both keyed entry knobs, but they are specified for different work. The Kwikset 400P-CP is a Grade 3 keyed entry knob for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, supplied with a round corner adjustable latch and round corner strike. The MK11 is a commercial Grade 2 lock certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000 and UL listed for 3 hour, A label or lesser doors, ships with a 114 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 300 T-strike measuring 2-3/4 inch by 1-1/8 inch, and is available with an ANSI A115.1 strike for ANSI prepped frames.
11) Do I need to specify handing on an Arrow MK Series knob lock?
No handing to specify. The MK Series cylindrical knob lock is reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand openings, inswing or out. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means one lock on the shelf instead of two.
12) I need matching hardware on non-locking doors in the same building. What goes with an Arrow MK11 entrance lock?
The MK11 is the keyed entrance/office piece, so you still need passage, privacy and dummy trim for the closets, restrooms and inactive leaves. Keeping to one series across an opening set is cleanest, but where you are mixing brands, ZenSupply carries the Dexter C2000 Series in matching Grade 2 knob form across passage, privacy and classroom functions, all in the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door range. Corbin Russwin CK4410 is another Grade 2 passage/closet knob at that thickness range.
13) Does the Arrow MK11 come with screws, or do I need to buy mounting hardware separately?
Both wood and machine screws are supplied, so the lock mounts to a wood door or a hollow metal door without a separate fastener pack. The latch and strike come with it as well: the 114 deadlatch and the 300 T-strike are standard. The only things you order on top are a non-standard backset, an ANSI strike if your frame is prepped for one, or a cylinder option other than the standard Arrow A keyway.
14) My door edge is already mortised for a 1 by 2-1/4 inch faceplate. Will the Arrow MK Series latch drop in?
That matches. The MK Series latch faceplate measures 1 by 2-1/4 inches, flat front on the 2-3/8 inch backset latch. Go to the 2-3/4 inch backset and the standard faceplate becomes 2-1/4 by 1-1/8 inches with a beveled front, 1/8 inch in 2 inches, so if your existing mortise is the narrower flat plate, order the 2-3/8 backset latch to avoid recutting the edge.
15) I do not need a key on this door - what is the non-keyed version to order?
For an opening that only needs a latch and no locking, the Dexter C2000 passage cylindrical ball knob lock is a Grade 2 non-keyed passage knob for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CK4410 is a Grade 2 non-keyed passage/closet cylindrical knob for the same thickness range. Falcon's W101 is a Grade 2 medium duty passage/closet knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a fire rating. The MK11 is a keyed single cylinder lock, so a passage function is a different lock rather than a de-keyed option, though the MK11 does come in an LC conventional less cylinder build if you are supplying your own cylinder.
16) What is the difference between an Arrow MK11 and a classroom function knob lock?
The MK11 locks from inside: pushing the inside turn button locks the outside knob, and a key outside or the inside knob releases it. A classroom lock has no inside locking control, so it is keyed from the outside only. The Dexter C2000 classroom cylindrical ball knob lock is a Grade 2 keyed classroom knob for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same grade and door range as the MK11, and is the one to specify where staff should not be able to lock or unlock the door from the room side.
17) Can I use a Baldwin or Emtek knob in place of an Arrow MK11 on an office door?
Not for a keyed office opening. The Baldwin Estate 5000 Baltimore knob is a passage lock with a 2-3/8 inch backset and full lip strike, the Estate 5077 Bethpage is a privacy knob, and the Emtek Classic Brass Crystal Georgetown and Providence knobsets are dummy pairs with no latch mechanism. The MK11 is a keyed single cylinder Entrance/Office lock with a dead locking latch bolt, so the decorative knobs cover different functions on interior and non-locking doors rather than substituting for it.
18) I need a dummy knob to match a keyed Arrow MK11 on a pair of doors - what pairs with it?
A dummy trim has no latch and simply mounts to the door face for pull side use. The Schlage A170 is a Grade 2 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical non-keyed knob trim, and the BEST 6K Series single dummy trim is a Grade 2 medium duty non-keyed cylindrical dummy knob, both matching the MK11 on grade. Cal-Royal's BA40 dummy knob cylindrical lock fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same range the MK11 covers.
19) We key everything on small format interchangeable cores - what are my options against an Arrow MK11?
The MK11 is built in an IC SFIC less core version, so it accepts a small format core you supply. On the peer side, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical knobset with an interchangeable core, though it is a passage function with no keyed cylinder in service. If the goal is one keying system across keyed and non-keyed openings, the MK11 IC build and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 conventional cylinder Entrance/Office lock represent the two directions: core-based versus conventional cylinder.
20) We standardize on Schlage keyways across the building - does anything match the Arrow MK11 there?
The MK11 is offered with a CS conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, and the MK Series cylinder is also available in other competitive manufacturer keyways, so it can be brought onto an existing Schlage key system without changing lock brands. If the rest of the openings are Schlage locks, the Schlage D10S is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed passage cylindrical knob lock with the Orbit knob and the A170 is a Grade 2 heavy duty single dummy trim, covering the non-keyed doors in that same family.
21) Which knob lock should I use on a bathroom or bedroom door instead of the Arrow MK11?
Those doors want a privacy function, which locks from inside with no key cylinder outside. The Dexter C2000 privacy cylindrical ball knob lock is a Grade 2 non-keyed privacy knob for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, matching the MK11 on grade and door range. The Cal-Royal BER20 privacy knob lock with brass trim and the Pamex FTF Baron privacy knob lockset are Grade 3 privacy options over the same door thickness range. The MK11 is a keyed lock with an outside cylinder, which is not what a bath or bedroom door calls for.
22) Is there a keyless option instead of the Arrow MK11 for a door where we do not want to issue keys?
The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function, covering doors from 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch. It controls entry by code rather than by cylinder, so there are no keys to issue or rekey. The MK11 takes a solid brass 6 pin cylinder in the Arrow A keyway that can be masterkeyed, grandmaster keyed and construction masterkeyed, which is the route to take when the door needs to sit inside an existing key system instead.
23) Is the Arrow MK11 a residential door knob or a commercial lock?
Commercial. It is a cylindrical chassis of cold rolled steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance, brass latch, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 with a UL 3 hour fire listing. Residential-grade knobs like the Kwikset 400P-CP keyed entry are Grade 3 and built for a house, not a tenant suite or a school corridor.
24) What knob styles and finishes does the Arrow MK Series entrance lock come in?
Three knob designs, all on a 2-9/16 inch rose: BD ball, DD Darrin and TA Tudor. Finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. If you are matching existing openings in a building, 626 satin chrome and 630-family brushed looks are the usual commercial default, so check what is on the adjacent doors before you pick.
25) Do any other Grade 2 entrance knobsets come in a range of finishes like the Arrow MK11?
The MK11 is built in eight finishes, from 605 bright brass and 606 satin brass through 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome, across ball, Darrin and Tudor knob designs on a 2-9/16 inch rose. Among Grade 2 entrance knobsets, Callan offers the Edgewood and the Roland, the latter in a US15 satin nickel finish, if the design of the knob is what is driving the choice.
