Arrow RL11-SR-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow RL11 entrance lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or is it for 1-3/4 inch only?
Both. The RL11 covers 1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, which takes in older interior wood doors and the usual 1-3/4 inch commercial leaf without a thickness kit. It needs a standard 2-1/8 inch bore through the door and a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset.
2) What does the RL11 turn-button entrance function actually do when a tenant locks it?
Turn the inside button and the outside lever locks; the latchbolt still retracts with a key from outside or by turning the inside lever, so nobody gets trapped. The button does not release when the door is opened, it has to be released by hand. That is the F109 entrance function, and it is why apartment corridor doors on this lock stay locked behind whoever set them.
3) Will the Arrow RL11 latch into the strike I already have in the frame?
It depends what is cut into your jamb. The RL11 ships with an R62 ASA strike, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, and Arrow also lists a 2-3/4 inch T strike and a 2-1/4 inch full lip strike for the series. The latchbolt has a 1/2 inch throw, so an existing strike lip has to sit close to flush with the stop for the bolt to seat. If your frame is already prepped for a 4-7/8 inch ASA cutout, the standard strike drops straight in.
4) Do I have to order the Arrow RL11 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The RL11 is non-handed, so one part number works on either swing and a property manager can stock a single lock across a building instead of splitting inventory left and right.
5) Can I get the Arrow RL11 to work on my existing Schlage keys, or take my small format cores?
Yes on both counts. Cylinder choices are the standard conventional cylinder in the Arrow A keyway, a CS conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, IC for small format interchangeable core (shipped less core, so bring your own), and LC conventional less cylinder if you are supplying the cylinder. Keying is ordered as keyed different or keyed alike, or you can select the less-cylinder route. The conventional cylinder is solid brass 6-pin and ships with 2 brass keys.
6) Can the Arrow RL11 go into a door already bored for another cylindrical lockset?
If that door has the standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, yes, the RL11 drops into the same prep. Those are the two usual commercial backsets, so most existing cylindrical lever or knob openings take it. Check the latch face cutout as well: the 2-3/8 inch backset latch uses a 1 x 2-1/4 inch front and the 2-3/4 inch uses 1-1/8 x 2-1/4.
7) What should I use instead of an Arrow RL11 on a door that needs to stay locked at all times from outside?
An entrance lever like the RL11 unlocks with a turn-button inside, so anyone can leave it unlocked. For an opening that must stay secured, a storeroom function is the right swap: the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door range the RL11 fits, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both keep the outside lever locked with entry by key only, which is what a storage, electrical, or mechanical room usually calls for.
8) What is the closest Grade 2 commercial entry lever to the Arrow RL11?
The Hager 2525 is the nearest straight equivalent. Both are Grade 2 cylindrical lever locks with an entrance function, and both fit doors from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so the Hager covers the same door range as the RL11. The Hager 2525 is listed for a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door, so it also reaches thicker doors than the RL11 covers. Where the RL11 locks with a turn-button inside that must be manually released, buyers standardizing a multi-family corridor should confirm the locking method on the Hager matches what the tenant expects.
9) Master Lock also lists an RL Series lever. Is that the same as the Arrow RL11?
No, and the shared series letters are a common mix-up when ordering. The Arrow RL11 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entrance lever. The Master Lock BC Series RL01 is a Grade 3 return-style keyed entry lockset. They are different manufacturers with different grade ratings, so a keying or trim order placed against one will not fill from the other. Order the Arrow by its AR-RL11 part number when the Arrow A keyway and RL trim are what the building is standardized on.
10) What is the heavy-duty upgrade from an Arrow RL11 keyed lever for a high-traffic opening?
The RL11 is Grade 2. For a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever, the Dexter C1000 Series entry/office lock is Grade 1 with a clutching lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, matching the door range the RL11 fits. If the door is thicker, the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series is a Grade 1 vandal-resistant cylindrical lever rated for a fire door and built for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, though the CL3110 is a passage function with no key. Clutching levers spin free when locked, which is what protects the lock in a school or high-traffic lobby where levers get forced.
11) What Grade 2 entry lever should I use instead of the Arrow RL11 if I want a Schlage C keyway from the factory?
The RL11 comes standard in the Arrow A keyway and is offered with a Schlage C keyway conventional cylinder as a cylinder option. If a building is already keyed to Schlage C and you want a peer built around it, the Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset, fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a classroom opening on that same keyway, the Cal-Royal AG03 in the AG Series is a Schlage C classroom lever on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
12) Can a dummy lever be used in place of an Arrow RL11 on an inactive leaf?
No, and this is a frequent ordering error on pairs of doors. The RL11 is a keyed cylindrical entrance lock with a working latchbolt. A dummy trim has no latch and no cylinder at all; it is surface-mounted pull trim only. If the inactive leaf of a pair needs matching trim, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 single dummy trim cylindrical lever and the BEST 9K Series 1DT is the Grade 1 heavy-duty single dummy. Order the RL11 for the active leaf that latches and a dummy only for the leaf that does not.
13) What is the alternative to an Arrow RL11 if I want to stop issuing keys to tenants?
A keyless lever removes the cylinder from the equation. The Lockey 2835 is a mechanical pushbutton keyless lever lock with a passage function and ADA compliance for doors from 1-3/16 inch to 2 inch, the Lockey 2835DC adds a double combination, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy-duty mechanical keypad lever set for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, with the 1150S offering an adjustable backset. For an electronic option, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the same grade rating as the RL11. The trade-off is that the RL11 accepts a key from outside and a single-cylinder keyed function, so a master key system stays intact with it.
14) Will an Arrow RL11 work on a 2 inch thick door?
The RL11 is built for doors from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. For a thicker leaf, the Corbin Russwin CL3300 Series and CL33900 Series Grade 1 levers are specified for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 fire-rated passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Dexter C1000 asylum function covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Among Grade 2 entry options, the Hager 2525 reaches 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Measure the door at the bore before ordering, since a lock sized short will not draw the roses tight against both faces.
15) What lever should I use instead of an Arrow RL11 on a classroom door?
An entrance function unlocks from the inside with a button, which most classroom codes do not accept. For a classroom opening, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is Grade 1 with a clutching mechanism, keyed, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter C1000 classroom security version adds locking of the outside lever by key from inside. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever on a 2-3/4 inch backset. All three fit the same 2-3/4 inch backset option the RL11 offers, so a door already prepped for the Arrow can usually take one without new boring.
16) The Imperial ED-EL500HD is described as entry function lever trim. Is it an alternative to the Arrow RL11?
No. The Imperial USA ED-EL500HD in the ED-500 Series is heavy duty escutcheon lever trim for an exit device, and the Corbin Russwin 585F715 is likewise a lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device. Those parts mount to a panic bar and have no latch of their own. The RL11 is a complete cylindrical lock with an R71 deadlatch and an R62 ASA strike, bored through the door. If the door has a pushpad exit device on the inside, the trim is what you need; if it is a plain bored door, the RL11 is.
17) What is the alternative to an Arrow RL11 for an access-controlled door that has to release on a fire alarm?
The RL11 is a mechanical keyed entrance lever with no electrical connection. For an opening tied into access control, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever operating on 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, available with the NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe means the lock unlocks when power drops, which is what an egress or alarm-release condition usually requires. The door will need power transfer hardware, which a mechanical RL11 opening will not already have.
18) Which latch faceplate comes with the RL11, and does it match my existing door mortise?
The 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch front comes on the 2-3/4 inch backset latch; the 2-3/8 inch backset latch uses a 1 x 2-1/4 inch front. Standard supply is the R71 deadlatch at 2-3/8 inch backset. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore before you pick, because the wrong backset puts the faceplate mortise in the wrong place.
19) Is a Grade 2 lever like the Arrow RL11 enough for an apartment building, or do I need Grade 1?
Grade 2 is the commercial-rated middle tier, and the RL Series is built for multi-family and light commercial traffic, which is where most apartment entry and corridor doors sit. If the opening is a high-traffic school, hospital or public building door, step up to Grade 1: the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Series is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical. Those are non-keyed passage functions though, so match the function to the door as well as the grade.
20) What is a comparable Grade 2 keyed entry lever to the Arrow RL11 from another brand?
The Hager 2525 is the closest straight equivalent we carry: Grade 2, commercial cylindrical entry lever, 1-3/8 to 2 inch door range. Falcon's B511CP6D is another Grade 2 cylindrical in entry/office function, and Cal-Royal's AG00 is a Grade 2 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/8 inch backset. The Cal-Royal is worth a look if your building is already keyed on Schlage C, though the RL11 can be ordered in that keyway too.
21) How far does the Arrow RL11 lever stick out from the door, and how much clearance do I need?
Total projection off the door face is 2-1/2 inches. The lever itself is pressure cast zinc, 4-3/4 inches long, on a wrought brass rose 3-3/8 inches in diameter. Those three numbers matter where a door swings back against a wall or where two levers on adjacent openings could clash.
22) Is the latchbolt on the Arrow RL11 deadlatching, so the door cannot be carded open?
Yes. The standard latch is the R71 deadlatch, and Arrow specifies a guarded latchbolt on all locking functions in the RL Series. The bolt is brass with a 1/2 inch throw and is UL Listed.
23) Is there a lighter-duty keyed entry lever than the Arrow RL11 for interior apartment doors?
Yes. The RL11 is Grade 2. If the opening calls for a lighter duty rating, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset, and the Master Lock BC Series return-style lever is a Grade 3 keyed entry lockset. Note that Grade 3 is a residential-duty cycle rating; the RL11 is designated for commercial use, so for a corridor or leasing-office door that sees daily traffic the Grade 2 rating is usually the safer choice.
24) I need a lever that matches the Arrow RL11 on the same corridor but with no key. What pairs with it?
For a passage opening on the same run of doors, the Accentra 4601LN and the Accentra 5301LN are both Grade 2 cylindrical passage levers, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium-duty non-handed cylindrical passage lever, and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. All carry the same Grade 2 rating as the RL11, and the RL11 itself is non-handed, so a non-handed passage lever keeps the stocking simple across a floor. If a room needs a privacy set rather than passage, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock.
25) Is the Falcon B511 a direct swap for the Arrow RL11?
They are close but not identical in function. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium-duty cylindrical lever with an entry/office function, the same grade as the RL11. The RL11 is designated entrance function, where the outside lever is locked by an inside turn-button that must be manually released. An entry/office function typically allows the button to release when the inside lever is turned or stay set, so confirm which release behavior the tenant or facility expects before swapping one for the other on an occupied unit.
26) Can I use a Baldwin Estate 5103 or an Emtek leverset in place of the Arrow RL11 in an apartment building?
They serve different openings. The Baldwin Estate 5103 comes in passage, privacy, and half dummy configurations, with the half dummy sold as a specific left hand or right hand part, and the Emtek Arts and Crafts and Cortina leversets in the comparable set are dummy pairs. None of those carry a keyed cylinder. The RL11 is a keyed entrance lever with a single-cylinder function and is non-handed, so one part covers either swing. For a unit entry door that needs a key from the corridor, the RL11 or another keyed entrance lever is the right part; the Baldwin and Emtek trims suit interior and decorative openings.
27) Can I service or replace the Arrow RL11 lever without pulling the whole lock apart?
The RL Series uses removable thru-bolts as standard, which is the change that makes maintenance on these straightforward: the trim comes off without wrecking the mounting. It ships with both wood and machine screws, so it mounts on wood doors and on metal doors with tapped holes.
28) What lever styles and finishes does the Arrow RL11 come in for matching the rest of my building?
Two lever designs, Broadway (BRR) and Sierra (SR), across six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default, and the same lever and finish carry across the RL Series functions so entrance, passage and privacy doors on a floor look alike.
29) I need a matching passage or dummy lever to go with my Arrow RL11 entry doors. What pairs with it?
The RL Series itself runs a range of functions in the same Broadway and Sierra lever designs and the same finishes, so the cleanest match is another RL function in the identical trim. If you are filling in from other brands, the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 non-keyed, and the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 non-handed cylindrical passage lever. Trim styling will not match the Arrow lever, so use those where appearance is not being held to one look.
30) How do I match the Arrow RL11 trim style with a decorative passage lever on the same floor?
The RL11 offers a Broadway lever and a Sierra lever with roses in bright brass, satin brass, satin bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, bright chrome, and satin chrome. For a passage lever on a nearby door in a comparable Grade 2 rating, the Bravura Miramar with round trim comes in US4 satin brass, and the Bravura Atlanta and Orlando use round trim while the Bravura Tampa uses square trim. Round trim reads closest to the RL11 rose profile; the square Tampa trim will visibly differ on the same corridor.
