Arrow MK17-BD-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Arrow MK17 classroom function actually work on a classroom door?
The MK17 is an F84 classroom function. The deadlocking latch bolt is operated by the knob from either side, except when the outside knob is locked by key from the outside. Once locked, the inside knob still retracts the latch, so people inside can always get out. There is no thumbturn or button on the inside, which is the point of a classroom lock: only a keyholder can secure or release the outside knob.
2) What backset does the Arrow MK17 come with, and can I get it for a wide stile door?
2-3/8 inch is the standard backset, with 2-3/4 inch, 3-3/4 inch and 5 inch also available. The 3-3/4 and 5 inch options cover wide stile aluminum and storefront style doors where the lock sits further off the edge. Note the MK17 ships with the 114 deadlatch at 2-3/4 inch backset, so confirm which backset your existing prep uses before ordering.
3) Will the Arrow MK17 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latch has a 1/2 inch throw and ships with the 300 T-strike measuring 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 inches, with a 1-1/4 inch lip-to-center dimension. If your frame is prepped for an ANSI A115.1 strike instead, the optional 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch strike is available. A 1/2 inch throw needs a strike pocket deep enough to let the deadlatch plunger seat against the strike face, otherwise the lock will not deadlock.
4) Can the Arrow MK17 be keyed into our existing school master key system?
The standard cylinder is a solid brass 6 pin with the Arrow A keyway, keyed to 5 pin for stock and supplied with two 5 pin brass keys. It can be masterkeyed, grandmaster keyed and construction masterkeyed. If your building runs Schlage, order the CS option for the Schlage C keyway. Other competitive keyways are available as conventional cylinders.
5) Can I get the MK17 for a small format interchangeable core system?
Yes. Order the IC option and the lock comes prepped for SFIC less core, so your locksmith installs your own cores and keying. If you want to reuse an existing conventional cylinder, the LC option ships less cylinder. Otherwise take the standard conventional cylinder or the Schlage C keyway version.
6) Will the MK17 work on a 2 inch thick door?
No. The MK17 is built for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For thicker leaves, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 Entrance/Office cylindrical knob covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches, and the Falcon X101 goes to 2-1/4 inches. Both are non-classroom functions, so match the function you need before substituting.
7) My door is 2 inches thick. Does the Arrow MK17 fit, or do I need a different knob lock?
The MK17 fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For thicker stock, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 Grade 2 entrance/office cylindrical knob covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon X101 Grade 1 cylindrical passage knobset covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Those are entrance/office and passage functions rather than classroom, so confirm the function the opening needs.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Arrow MK17 classroom knob lock?
The Dexter C2000 Series classroom cylindrical ball knob lock is the nearest match: it is also a Grade 2 keyed classroom-function cylindrical knob lock fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness range the MK17 covers. The MK17 differs in that it is offered with a choice of Ball, Darrin, or Tudor knob designs on a 2-9/16 inch rose, and with several cylinder options including Schlage C keyway, SFIC less core, and less cylinder.
9) I need a Grade 1 knob lock instead of the Arrow MK17 for a high-traffic opening. What should I look at?
The MK17 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2. For a heavier-duty knob, the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and single cylinder, and the BEST 8K Series entrance-function knob lock is Grade 1 heavy duty. Note that neither is classroom function: the MK17 keeps the latch operable from the inside knob at all times while the outside knob is locked by key from outside, which is what classroom openings usually require.
10) Is a storeroom knob lock the same as the Arrow MK17 classroom lock?
No. The Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is the Grade 1 storeroom version. Storeroom function keeps the outside knob locked at all times so entry is by key only. The MK17 classroom function leaves both knobs operating the latch until the outside knob is locked from outside by key, after which the inside knob still retracts the latch.
11) The spec calls for a fire-rated knob lock. How does the Arrow MK17 compare to other fire-rated knob options?
The MK17 is UL and c.UL listed for use on 3 hour, A label or lesser doors and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2. Among other fire-rated knob locks, the Falcon W101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical knob with a fire rating and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Falcon X101 is Grade 1 heavy duty with a fire rating. Both Falcon models are passage/closet function, so for a keyed classroom opening the MK17 is the one that carries the function.
12) Does the Arrow MK17 meet federal specification requirements for government work?
MK Series locks are listed to Federal Specification FF-H-106C and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 2, with UL and cUL listing for 3 hour A label doors. That set of listings is what most government and institutional submittals ask for on a medium duty cylindrical lock.
13) Do I need to order the MK17 handed for a left or right door?
No. The MK17 knob lock is reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and you can stock a single SKU across a building.
14) Is a Grade 2 knob lock enough for a school corridor, or should I be buying Grade 1?
The MK17 is Grade 2, medium duty commercial hardware, meant for openings where heavy duty Grade 1 is not required: interior classrooms, offices, back-of-house doors. For high abuse or high traffic openings, a Grade 1 cylindrical knob like the Falcon X101 or the Schlage D Series is the heavier option. Also worth noting for accessibility: a knob is not ADA compliant operating hardware, so on openings that need lever operation you want a lever lock rather than the MK17.
15) Is the MK17 keyed on one side only?
Single cylinder, outside only. The key cylinder sits in the outside knob and locks or unlocks that knob; the inside knob is always free to retract the latch. If you need key access from both faces, this is not the function for it.
16) The opening does not need a key. What is the non-keyed alternative to the Arrow MK17?
The MK17 is a keyed single-cylinder lock. If the door only needs a latch with no locking, the Corbin Russwin CK4410 is a Grade 2 non-keyed passage/closet cylindrical knob lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter C2000 passage knob is a Grade 2 non-keyed cylindrical knob for the same thickness range. For a bathroom or bedroom that needs inside-only locking, the Dexter C2000 privacy knob is the Grade 2 non-keyed privacy option.
17) Can I use a Grade 3 residential knob lock in place of the Arrow MK17?
They are built to different standards. The MK17 is a commercial Grade 2 lock UL and c.UL listed for 3 hour, A label or lesser doors. Grade 3 keyed knobs such as the Cal-Royal BER00 entrance/office with Kwikset keyway, the Pamex FTF Baron entrance/office, and the Kwikset 400P-CP keyed entry are lighter-duty alternatives, and none of them are classroom function. Where a project drawing calls for Grade 2 commercial or a fire-rated opening, the MK17 is the one that matches.
18) What is a keyed alternative to the Arrow MK17 if the office door only needs entry/office function?
For an office door where the outside knob is locked and unlocked by a turn button or key rather than classroom function, the Dexter C2000 entry/office knob is a Grade 2 keyed cylindrical knob for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same range the MK17 fits, and the Callan Edgewood is a Grade 2 entrance knobset. The MK17 remains the classroom-function choice.
19) Is the Schlage A170 or a dummy knob a substitute for the Arrow MK17?
No. The Schlage A170 is a single dummy trim, Grade 2 non-keyed, as are the BEST 6K single dummy trim and the Cal-Royal BA40 dummy knob. Dummy trim is a fixed pull with no latch and no cylinder. The MK17 is a keyed cylindrical lock with a deadlocking latch bolt and a 1/2 inch throw, so it is not interchangeable with dummy trim.
20) I need classroom security on a door with an exit device, not a bored lock. What do I use instead of the Arrow MK17?
The MK17 is a cylindrical bored lockset requiring a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 7/8 inch edge bore. On an opening already fitted with an exit device, use exit device trim instead: the Sargent 28C-KNOB is knob-and-rose trim with classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors. The MK17 would not mount on a door prepped for an exit device.
21) Is there a keyless option instead of the Arrow MK17 so I do not have to issue keys?
The MK17 is keyed with a single cylinder and is available in Arrow A keyway, Schlage C keyway, SFIC less core, or less cylinder. If you would rather not manage keys at all, the Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with auto-locking passage function that fits doors from 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch. It is code-operated rather than classroom function, so the access behavior is different.
22) Which knob locks can I standardize with the Arrow MK17 across a building that needs several functions?
If you want the same grade across functions, the Dexter C2000 Series covers Grade 2 classroom, entry/office, passage, and privacy knobs all fitting 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, matching the MK17 thickness range. Within Grade 2 across brands you can also pair the MK17 with the Corbin Russwin CK4410 passage knob and the Sargent 6G04 storeroom knob. Keying and trim design will not match across brands, so where keys must interchange keep the MK17 family on those doors.
23) What knob styles and finishes does the Arrow MK17 come in?
Three knob designs, all on a 2-9/16 inch rose: BD ball, DD Darrin and TA Tudor. Finishes are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. That 2-9/16 inch rose diameter is what matters if you are replacing older locks and want to cover existing wear marks on the door face.
24) Does the Arrow MK17 come with mounting screws, and will it work on a wood door?
Both wood and machine screws are supplied, so it mounts on hollow metal and on wood doors without sourcing separate fasteners. The lock chassis is cold rolled steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance, and the latch is brass in a steel housing with the same finish.
