1) What does the classroom function on the Arrow RK17 actually do when someone locks it?
Classroom function means the key works only from the outside. The key locks and unlocks the outside knob; the inside knob is always free, so anyone inside can always get out without a key. There is no button or turn on the inside to lock the door, which is the point of the function: a teacher or staff member locks the corridor side with the key and nobody can accidentally lock the room from within. It is a single cylinder lock, cylinder outside only.
2) Will the Arrow RK17 fit a 1-3/8 inch door, and what bore does it need?
It fits doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches as standard, so both older 1-3/8 inch interior doors and standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors take it with no extra parts. The door needs a standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore through the face. Backset is 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches, so it drops into either of the two common prep dimensions. Ships non-handed, so you do not specify left or right.
3) Will the RK17 latch into the strike plate already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 1/2 inch, which is what a standard cylindrical strike is cut for, so an existing bored-lock strike will normally take it. The lock ships with an R60 T-strike, 2-3/4 by 1-1/8 inches. If your frame is prepped for the 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike or a 2-1/4 inch full lip strike, those are both available for the RK Series instead. Match the latch face too: the front is 1 by 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/8 inch backset latch and 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/4 inch backset version.
4) Can I get the Arrow RK17 keyed into my existing Schlage C master key system?
Yes. Order the CS cylinder option and the lock comes with a conventional cylinder cut for the Schlage C keyway, so it keys into an existing SC1/C system. The default is Arrow's own A keyway, 6 pin solid brass, with two brass keys. If you run small format interchangeable core, order the IC option, which ships less core so you can drop in your own. LC gives you the lock less cylinder entirely for a locksmith to fit. All four cylinder choices come in every finish offered.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering an Arrow RK17 classroom knob lock?
Three choices. Cylinder type: standard Arrow A keyway, CS for Schlage C keyway, IC for SFIC less core, or LC for less cylinder. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed satin bronze, 629 bright stainless, or 630 satin stainless. And keying: keyed different, keyed alike, or none if you picked one of the less-cylinder options. There is also a key code field if you are matching an existing system. No handing to specify, it is non-handed.
6) Is a Grade 2 knob lock enough for a school or apartment corridor door?
The RK17 is Grade 2 and built for commercial use, meeting ANSI/BHMA F84, the classroom function designation. Grade 2 suits multi-family housing and light commercial traffic. For a high-traffic opening where you want Grade 1, look at a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical knob such as the Sargent 8XG04 or the Falcon X101. Bear in mind knobs are not ADA-compliant operating hardware where a lever is required; if the opening calls for a lever, this is the wrong trim.
7) Will an Arrow RK17 fit a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
No. The RK Series covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches only. For a thicker door, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 entrance/office knob and the CK4310 passage knob both go to 2 inches, and the Falcon X101 passage knobset covers up to 2-1/4 inches. None of those is classroom function, so if the opening is both thick and needs classroom keying, check the function against the door before committing.
8) What comes in the box with an Arrow RK17, and do I need to buy anything else to install it?
Everything for a standard install is included: the R70 deadlatch with 2-3/8 inch backset, the R60 T-strike at 2-3/4 by 1-1/8 inches, wood and machine screws, and two brass keys on the keyed cylinder versions. Removable thru-bolts are standard. If your frame is prepped for the 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike or a 2-1/4 inch full lip strike, specify that instead of the T-strike. On the IC version you supply your own SFIC core, and on the LC version you supply the whole cylinder.
9) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Arrow RK17 classroom knob lock?

11) Can I use an entrance or office function knob in place of a classroom lock?
They are not interchangeable. On the Arrow RK17, the key outside locks and unlocks the outside knob only and the inside knob is always free - the room can be secured from the corridor without anyone being locked in. An exit device trim, not a bored lock. The Arrow RK17 is a cylindrical lock that requires a standard 2-1/8 inch bore through the door. For a door already fitted with a panic or exit device, the Sargent 28C-KNOB is knob and rose exit device trim in classroom function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Imperial USA ED-BKL580 is knob trim in storeroom function from the ED-500 Series. Those mount to the device chassis rather than into a 2-1/8 inch cross bore.
13) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - which knob locks cover it?
The Arrow RK17 fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For thicker leaves, the Corbin Russwin CK4310 Grade 1 passage/closet knob and the CK4851 entrance/office knob both cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Deltana 3381 Egg Knob entry, 6171 Round Knob entry and 6112 St. Thomas privacy knob also cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon X101 Grade 1 passage knobset with interchangeable core reaches 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. All of those are passage, privacy or entrance functions rather than classroom, so match the function to the opening as well as the thickness.
14) Can I key a run of Arrow RK17 classroom locks alike across a building?
Keyed alike is an option, so a set ordered together can run on one key, or keyed different if each room needs its own. For an existing system, the CS option puts them on the Schlage C keyway and the IC option ships less core so your own SFIC cores go straight in and the locks join whatever masterkey system you already run. Cylinders are solid brass 6 pin.
15) How far does the Arrow RK17 knob stick out from the door, and how big is the rose?
Total projection from the face of the door is 2-3/4 inches, with a wrought brass rose 2-1/2 inches in diameter.
