Arrow RL17-SR-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the classroom function on the Arrow RL17 actually do when the key is turned?
On the RL17, the key on the outside locks or unlocks the outside lever only. The inside lever is always free, so anyone in the room can get out without a key at any time. When the outside lever is locked, entry takes a key; when unlocked, the outside lever retracts the latch freely. There is no button or thumbturn inside, which is the point of a classroom lock: a teacher or staff member cannot accidentally leave the room secured against the corridor without deliberately keying it that way from the hall side. It carries the ANSI/BHMA F84 function designation.
2) Will the Arrow RL17 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latchbolt has a 1/2 inch throw, so it needs a strike with a matching lip and pocket depth. The lock ships with an R62 ASA strike measuring 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches, which is the standard commercial frame prep. If your frames are already cut for a 4-7/8 inch ASA strike, the supplied one drops straight in. Arrow also lists a 2-3/4 inch T strike and a 2-1/4 inch full lip strike for frames prepped the older, smaller way. The latch front measures 1 by 2-1/4 inches on a 2-3/8 inch backset and 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so check which mortise your door edge already carries.
3) Can I get the Arrow RL17 to work on my existing Schlage keys?
Yes, on the Schlage C keyway. The RL17 is offered with a CS conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, which is what most buildings running Schlage key systems are already cut to. The default is Arrow's own A keyway with a solid brass 6 pin cylinder and two brass keys. If you key your own, order it LC (conventional less cylinder) or IC (small format interchangeable core, less core) and drop your own core in. Keyed different is standard; keyed alike is available if you want one key across a run of doors.
4) Is a Grade 2 classroom lever like the Arrow RL17 enough for a school corridor, or do I need Grade 1?
Grade 2 is a medium duty commercial rating, and the RL Series is built for multi-family and light commercial openings rather than high traffic institutional corridors. For a classroom door that sees constant cycling all day, a Grade 1 classroom lock is the heavier answer, and the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is the Grade 1 equivalent ZenSupply carries, also fitting 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Where the RL17 earns its place is apartment common rooms, offices, storage and light commercial doors that need classroom keying without Grade 1 cost.
5) Is the Arrow RL17 the right lock for an apartment unit entry door?
Not usually. The RL17 is a classroom function, which means the outside lever can only be locked with a key from the hall side. A resident cannot lock the door behind them from inside. For a unit entry you want an entrance or office function with an inside button or turn, such as the Hager 2525 Grade 2 entry lever or the Falcon B511CP6D Grade 2 entry/office lever. The RL17 belongs on doors managed by staff: classrooms, community rooms, mechanical and storage doors, offices where the manager controls the lock state.
6) Will the Arrow RL17 work on a 2 inch thick door?
No. The RL17 covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors and will not make up on a 2 inch leaf. For thicker doors ZenSupply carries the Hager 2500 series levers rated 1-3/8 to 2 inches and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series at 1-3/4 to 2 inches, and the Falcon K101 spans 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches. Measure the actual leaf, not the frame rabbet, before you commit.
7) The Arrow RL17 does not fit my 2 inch thick door. What classroom-capable lever will?
The Arrow RL17 fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. For thicker doors, the Dexter C1000 Series asylum lever (F87) covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch and gives key control from both sides, and the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series vandal resistant cylindrical lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch as a Grade 1 fire rated lock, though in passage/closet function rather than a keyed one. The Corbin Russwin CL3300 Series 585F715 lock lever also covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch.
8) Is there another Grade 2 classroom lever lock besides the Arrow RL17?
Yes. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever from the AG Series, supplied with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Arrow RL17 is also Grade 2 classroom function and is offered with a Schlage C keyway conventional cylinder as well as an Arrow standard cylinder, an SFIC less core, and a conventional less cylinder version, with backsets of 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch. If a facility is already keyed into Schlage C, both will accept that keying; the AG03 comes in the 2-3/4 inch backset, while the RL17 covers either backset.
9) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Arrow RL17 classroom lever lock?
The Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever lock is the Grade 1 counterpart to the Arrow RL17. Both are keyed classroom-function cylindrical lever locks and both fit doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, so the door prep carries over. The Arrow RL17 is Grade 2; the Dexter C1000 classroom is Grade 1 and uses a clutching lever. On an opening where the specification calls for Grade 1 cylindrical hardware, the Dexter C1000 classroom is the direct swap.
10) What should I use instead of a classroom lever when the room needs to be lockable from the inside?
The Arrow RL17 is classroom function: the key outside locks and unlocks the outside lever only, and the inside lever is always free, so there is no way to secure the door from within the room. For a lockdown-capable opening, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom security lever is a Grade 1 classroom security function keyed lever that fits the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door range. For a room that simply needs to be secured from the corridor and never unlocked by lever, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with the Withnell lever, both fitting doors from 1-3/8 inch.
11) What is the difference between the Arrow RL17 classroom lever and an entrance or office lever lock?
On the Arrow RL17, the key outside locks and unlocks the outside lever only and the inside lever is always free, so the door state is controlled solely by key. An entrance/office lever adds inside control of the outside lever: the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset. 12) Do I have to specify handing when I order an Arrow RL17 classroom lever?
No handing to specify. The RL17 is non-handed, so the same lock goes on a left or right hand door without swapping parts. That matters if you are buying for a building with mixed swings, because you can stock one part number instead of two.
13) How far does the Arrow RL17 lever stick out from the door, and will it clear a door stop or adjacent wall?
Total projection from the face of the door is 2-1/2 inches, and the lever itself is 4-3/4 inches long. The rose is 3-3/8 inch diameter wrought brass. Those three numbers are what you need when the door swings back against a wall or sits near a corner: a 4-3/4 inch lever throwing 2-1/2 inches off the face needs clearance, and it decides whether you want a wall stop instead of a floor stop.
14) Is the latch on the Arrow RL17 a deadlatch, and will it resist being slipped with a card?
Yes. The standard latch is an R71 deadlatch with a guarded latchbolt, which Arrow supplies on all locking functions in the RL Series. 15) Can I standardize a whole building on the Arrow RL17 with matching non-keyed doors?
Partly. The RL17 covers the keyed classroom openings, but hall, closet and dummy doors need non-keyed trim from the same visual family or the building will not match. Only where the door does not need to be secured. The Arrow RL17 is a keyed single cylinder classroom lock; a passage lever has no cylinder at all. 17) Is the Master Lock RL Series the same as the Arrow RL Series lever lock?
No, despite the shared RL name. The Arrow RL17 is a Grade 2 commercial classroom cylindrical lever from the Arrow RL Series. The Master Lock RL01 is a Grade 3 keyed entry lockset with a return style lever from the Master Lock BC Series, carrying the RL Series designation on a different manufacturer's numbering. They differ in grade, in function, and in the manufacturer's keying system, so ordering by the RL prefix alone will not get you an Arrow classroom lock.
18) What keyless alternative replaces an Arrow RL17 where I do not want to issue keys?
The Arrow RL17 is key operated from the outside with a solid brass 6 pin cylinder and two brass keys. To run the opening on a code instead, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 2835 is a mechanical pushbutton keyless lever lock with passage function and ADA compliance for doors 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch, with a double combination version in the 2835DC. Note the Lockey units are passage function, so they do not reproduce the classroom key control of the RL17.
19) What is a lower cost lever than the Arrow RL17 for light traffic doors, and where does it fall short?
The Arrow RL17 is a Grade 2 commercial lock. Grade 3 levers cover lighter traffic: the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. Neither is classroom function, so the outside lever can be left unlocked by an occupant. On a door that has to stay under key control, stay with the Grade 2 classroom RL17.
20) I need a fire rated lever lock. Does the Arrow RL17 cover that, or should I look elsewhere?
For openings where the door assembly requires a fire rated cylindrical lever, the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever lock with a fire rating, in passage/closet function for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty fire rated cylindrical passage lock with non-handed levers for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Both are non-keyed passage function, so pair them with a keyed lock on the doors that must secure.
21) Which lever lock should I use instead of the Arrow RL17 on a door tied to an access control system?
The Arrow RL17 is a mechanical classroom lock keyed from the outside. For a door switched by an access control panel, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock running on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, offered with the NZ lever and D rose in the CL33903 Series and in a keyed 12VAC/DC version in the CL33900 Series. Fail safe means the outside lever unlocks on loss of power, which is the opposite behavior to a key-only classroom lock.

What you see outside is your finish choice, and 626 satin chrome or 625 bright chrome are the harder-wearing picks for a humid corridor compared with 605 bright brass, which shows handling. This is a commercial-rated lock, not an exterior-exposure product.
24) Will a dummy lever match the Arrow RL17 on an inactive leaf?
A dummy lever is trim only, with no latch and no cylinder, so it cannot replace the Arrow RL17 on an operating door, but it is the correct partner on the inactive leaf of a pair.
