Standard faceplate for 2-3/8” (60.32.mm) backset measures 2-1/4” (57.15mm) x 1” (25.40mm) with a flat front, for 2-3/4” (69.85mm) backset standard faceplate measures 2-1/4” (57.15mm) x 1-1/8” (28.57mm) with beveled front 1/8” (3.17mm) in 2” (50.8mm).

1) What does the communicating function on an Arrow MK05 knob lock actually do?
The MK05 is a communicating lock: a dead locking latch bolt is retracted by the knob from either side, and a turn button on either side locks or unlocks the opposite knob. That is what makes it a communicating lock rather than a privacy set, either occupant can lock the other side out. It is non-keyed, so there is no cylinder and no key override. Because of that, it must never go on a room with no other entrance, someone can be locked in with no way to release from outside. Typical use is between adjoining rooms, connecting hotel or dorm rooms, or a suite pair where both rooms have their own corridor door.
2) Will the Arrow MK05 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The latch throws 1/2 inch, which is the normal throw for a bored knob lock, so it will engage an existing cylindrical lock strike pocket. The set ships with the 300 T-strike measuring 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 inches, and all strikes carry a 1-1/4 inch lip to center. If your frame is prepped for the larger ANSI A115.1 cutout, that strike is available instead at 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches. The point to check is your frame cutout shape, not the throw.
3) What backset does the Arrow MK05 come with and can I get it for a wider stile or a fire door with a deep backset?
2-3/8 inch is the standard backset, with 2-3/4 inch, 3-3/4 inch and 5 inch available. The standard latch supplied is the 104 springlatch at 2-3/4 inch backset. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore before ordering, 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 are the two you will meet on almost every job, and the 3-3/4 and 5 inch options exist for doors with a wide stile or a push plate in the way.
4) Is the Arrow MK05 knob lock approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. Arrow MK Series locks are UL and cUL listed for use on 3 hour, A label or lesser doors, and they are certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 2. The MK05 also carries the F78 ANSI function designation and meets Federal Specification FF-H-106C, which is what a government or institutional spec writer will be looking for on the submittal.
5) What is the difference between a communicating lock and a privacy lock for a bathroom door?
On a privacy set the turn button locks the door from inside only, and the other side stays locked out. On the MK05 communicating lock, the button on either side locks or unlocks the opposite knob, so either room can shut the other out. That is wrong for a bathroom, a single occupant could be locked in. For a bath or bedroom use a privacy function instead, such as the Dexter C2000 Grade 2 privacy ball knob lock or the Cal-Royal BER20 Grade 3 privacy knob lock.
6) The communicating function warns against rooms with no other entrance - what knob lock should I use on a room with only one door?
The Arrow MK05 turn button locks the opposite knob, so it is not intended for a room whose only way out is that door. For a single-entrance room that still needs bathroom-style privacy, the Dexter C2000 Series Grade 2 privacy ball knob lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy knob lock over the same thickness range. If no locking is wanted at all, the Corbin Russwin CK4410 is a Grade 2 passage/closet cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
7) What knob lock fits a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches if the Arrow MK05 will not?
The Arrow MK05 fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a thicker door, the Corbin Russwin CK4310 Grade 1 passage/closet lock and the CK4851 entrance/office cylindrical lock both cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon X101 Grade 1 passage knobset covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Among decorative options, the Deltana 6171 Round Knob entry and 3381 Egg Knob entry cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch.
8) I need a heavier duty knob lock than the Arrow MK05 for a high traffic commercial opening - what steps up from Grade 2?
The Arrow MK05 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 and UL listed for 3 hour fire doors. For a Grade 1 knob lock, the Falcon X101 is a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical passage knobset with an interchangeable core, fire rated, covering 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors; the Schlage D10S is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage latch with an Orbit knob; and the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Corbin Russwin's CK4310 is a Grade 1 passage/closet cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
9) Are dummy knobs like the Schlage A170 or BEST 6K a substitute for the Arrow MK05?
No. The Arrow MK05 is a working cylindrical lock with a dead locking latch bolt operated by the knob from either side. The Schlage A170 is Grade 2 single dummy trim and the BEST 6K Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty - dummy trim has no latch and no chassis, so it mounts as a pull only. The Bravura Biloxi and the Cal-Royal BA40 are also dummy knobs. Use a dummy where a fixed knob is wanted on an inactive leaf, not where the door must latch.
10) Does the Arrow MK05 have to be ordered handed?
No handing to specify. The MK05 is reversible, so one lock works on a left or right hand door and you can stock a single part number across a building instead of splitting your shelf between hands. Useful for a property manager carrying spares for a floor of adjoining rooms.
11) Which faceplate comes on the MK05 latch, and will it drop into my existing mortised edge prep?
It depends on the backset you order. At 2-3/8 inch backset the standard faceplate is 2-1/4 x 1 inch with a flat front. At 2-3/4 inch backset it is 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inch with a beveled front, 1/8 inch in 2 inches, which matches a beveled door edge. Faceplates are brass, bronze or stainless steel. If the old latch left a 2-1/4 x 1 inch mortise, order the 2-3/8 inch backset latch and you will not be chiseling.
12) What knob designs and finishes does the Arrow MK05 come in?
Three knob designs, all on a 2-9/16 inch rose: BD ball knob, DD Darrin knob, and TA Tudor knob. Each is offered in eight finishes, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. That 2-9/16 inch rose is the number to check if you are matching existing trim, it has to cover whatever ring the old lock left behind.

15) Will a residential knob lock work in place of the Arrow MK05 on a commercial door?

17) Is exit device knob trim an alternative to the Arrow MK05?
No. The Arrow MK05 is a self-contained cylindrical knob lock with its own chassis and latch. The Sargent 28C-KNOB is exit device trim with a knob and rose for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Sargent 78-2875 is an outside knob only with B design - both mount to an exit device rather than latching on their own. The Imperial USA ED-BKL580 is likewise knob trim in the ED-500 Series. Trim of that kind only makes sense when an exit device is already on the door.
18) What Grade 2 knob lock should I standardize on across a facility if some doors need a key and some do not?
The Arrow MK05 covers the communicating openings in Grade 2, with a knob handle and a 2-9/16 inch rose. 19) Is a keyless combination knob lock an alternative to the Arrow MK05 for controlling a connecting door?
They solve different problems. The Arrow MK05 uses a turn button on each side to lock or unlock the opposite knob, with no key and no code. The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function for 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch doors, so access is granted by code rather than by whoever is standing at the door.
