1) Can the Klein Tools MM500 measure 480V three-phase panel voltage?
No. The MM500 measures up to 750V, so it covers 120V, 208V, 240V and 480V circuits on the voltage side. It detects AC or DC automatically, so you don't switch the dial between them, and it auto ranges so there's no picking a range before you probe.
2) Will the MM500 read resistance high enough for HVAC and control circuit troubleshooting?
The MM500 tops out at 4000 ohms on resistance. That covers thermostat and control wiring, relay and contactor coils, and low ohm motor windings, but it will not read megohm-range values, so it is not the tool for insulation testing or checking high value resistors.
3) Is the Klein MM500 a full featured multimeter or a basic three function tester?
Three functions only: continuity, resistance and voltage, on a three button layout instead of a rotary dial. There is no current measurement, no capacitance and no frequency. If your work is verifying a circuit is dead, checking a wire end to end, and ohming out a coil, that is exactly what it does. If you need amp draw on a motor, you want a clamp meter instead.
4) Does the MM500 beep for continuity or do you have to watch the screen?
Both. The MM500 gives a visual and an audible continuity indication, triggering up to 25 ohms. That matters when you are ohming out a run with the meter on the floor or in a panel you cannot see into, and the 25 ohm threshold means a long or corroded conductor still registers rather than reading open.
5) Can you test a tamperproof outlet with the Klein MM500 without fighting the leads?
That is what the lead storage is built around. The MM500's self storing leads are spaced to match outlet slots, so you can probe a tamperproof receptacle with the leads still docked in the meter instead of trying to hold two loose probes at the shutter.
6) Can I take a reading in a dark panel or crawlspace with the MM500 and still see it after I pull my head out?
Yes on both counts. The display is a backlit 4000 count LCD, and Auto-Hold captures the first stable value, so you can probe a terminal you cannot see the screen from and read it after. Bright display with backlight covers the dark ceiling space or basement panel.
7) How hard is it to change the battery in a Klein MM500 on a jobsite?
The battery door uses captive screws, so the screws stay in the door and don't drop into the panel or vanish in the gravel.
