Klein Tools MM600 Digital Multimeter, Auto-Ranging, 1000V

The MM600 carries a CAT IV 600V and CAT III 1000V safety rating, so it covers CAT III work up to 1000V (branch panels, feeders, 480V distribution) and CAT IV at the service entrance and utility connection up to 600V. It measures up to 1000V AC and 1000V DC.

Beyond 1000V AC/DC, the MM600 reads 10A AC and 10A DC current, resistance to 40 megohms, capacitance to 1000uF, frequency from 1Hz to 500KHz, and temperature from 0 to 1000 degrees F (-18 to 538 C). It also does duty-cycle, diode test and continuity. That covers motor windings, ballast and start capacitors, VFD output frequency, and thermocouple temperature checks on one tool.

A thermocouple with adapter is in the box, along with test leads, alligator clips, a carrying pouch, and the batteries. Nothing extra is needed to start reading temperature up to 1000 degrees F.

Klein states this meter is for basic and controlled electromagnetic environments such as residential, business and light-industrial locations. For MRO work in a plant with heavy drives, large motors and high electrical noise, that is outside the stated environment. For a property manager, a facilities crew, a contractor or an electrical service tech working buildings, it is squarely in range.

Yes, up to 1000uF. That covers most run capacitors and the typical range of start capacitors used on residential and light commercial condensing units. The meter is auto-ranging, so you select capacitance and it picks the range. Test the cap out of circuit and discharged.

It is built to endure a 6.6 foot (2 m) drop, which covers a fall from a step ladder or off a panel ledge. Ingress protection is IP42, so it shrugs off dust and dripping water but is not a wet-location or washdown meter. Klein's own warning is not to use it in wet weather or during electrical storms.

The MM600 is auto-ranging: you pick the function and it selects the range itself, which is faster when you are moving between a 24V control circuit, a 120V receptacle and a 480V feeder on the same call. Manual ranging is what you want when you need to lock a range for repeated comparative readings on a bench. For general field troubleshooting, auto-ranging with a 4000 count display is the usual choice.

It is serviceable. Klein lists replacement parts 69028, 69034, 69035 and 69410 for the MM600, and accessories 69401 and 69417. The fuse compartment is designed for access, so a blown fuse from a current-measurement mistake does not scrap the meter.

10A AC and 10A DC through the meter leads. That handles branch circuit loads, control circuits and small motors, but a 20A or larger feeder has to be read with a clamp meter rather than broken into the MM600. Current is measured in series, so the circuit must be opened to insert the meter.

Two AAA cells, and the meter has a low battery indicator plus a battery and fuse compartment you can get into without pulling the meter apart. Keep spare AAAs and a fuse in the pouch for a service truck.

The meter measures 7 inches long by 3.55 inches wide by 2.09 inches high (17.8 x 9 x 5.3 cm) and weighs 14.4 oz (408 g). It ships with its own carrying pouch, so it drops into a bag or on a belt without a separate case.

It uses a 4000 count LCD, meaning readings resolve to four digits (for example 0.001 to 3.999 on the low range) rather than the 2000 count of a basic meter. That is enough resolution for checking voltage drop across a connection, low ohms on a winding, or a millivolt-level signal.
