Klein Tools MM720 Digital Multimeter, TRMS Auto-Ranging, 1000V, Temp, Low Impedance

The MM720 carries a CAT IV 600V and CAT III 1000V safety rating, so it covers service entrance work at 600V and distribution panels and feeders up to 1000V. That puts a 480V panel inside CAT III territory for this meter. It reads up to 1000V AC/DC. Use the protective gear the job calls for any time live conductors are exposed.

Low impedance mode puts a low resistance load across the test leads, which bleeds off the capacitively coupled voltage that a standard high impedance meter reads as a phantom 40 or 60 volts on a dead conductor. Switch to LoZ and a ghost reading collapses toward zero, while a real energized conductor holds its voltage. This is the setting that tells a troubleshooter whether a switch leg is actually hot or just picking up from a neighbouring conductor in the same raceway.

A thermocouple with adapter ships with the MM720, and the meter reads -40 to 1832 degrees F (-40 to 1000 degrees C). That range covers supply and return air, refrigerant line temperature, and motor and breaker heat checks, so an HVAC tech does not need to carry a second instrument for contact temperature.

Everything needed to take a reading out of the box: test leads, a thermocouple with adapter, batteries, and a carrying pouch. It runs on 2 x AAA cells, and the battery and fuse compartment is accessible from outside so a blown fuse does not mean a trip back to the truck for a full teardown.

If you are measuring current or voltage on circuits fed through VFDs, LED drivers, electronic ballasts, or switching power supplies, an averaging meter reads those distorted waveforms low. The MM720 uses true RMS, so it reports the correct value on non-sinusoidal loads. On clean sine wave circuits, resistive heat and incandescent lighting, an averaging meter agrees with it. Modern commercial and multi-family buildings are full of electronic loads, which is what makes TRMS the safer default for a service tech.

The MM720 is built to take a 6.6 foot (2 m) drop and is rated IP42, which means protection from solid objects 1mm and larger and from dripping water at up to 15 degrees off vertical. That handles jobsite dust and an incidental drip, not rain or a washdown. Klein's own instruction is to keep it out of wet weather and away from electrical storms, so treat it as a covered-work meter.

Current measurement tops out at 10A AC/DC through the meter's own leads, which means the circuit has to be broken and the meter placed in series. That works for control circuits, small appliance loads, and bench testing. For a running motor or a branch circuit you do not want to open, you want a clamp meter instead, since the MM720 has no jaw and 10A is below most motor running current anyway.

Capacitance reads to 6000 uF, which covers run and start capacitors on HVAC condensers and single-phase motors. Frequency measures from 1 Hz to 500 kHz, wide enough for 60 Hz line frequency, VFD output frequency, and control signal work. Duty cycle is on board too, which is what you need for PWM control signals on modern equipment.

Klein specifies the MM720 for basic and controlled electromagnetic environments, which means residential, business and light-industrial locations. A plant floor with large drives, welders, or heavy inductive switching is a harsher electromagnetic environment than this meter is specified for. For MRO work across apartments, offices, schools, retail and light manufacturing it is within its stated environment.

The meter body measures 6.94 inches (17.6 cm) by 3.37 inches (8.5 cm) by 1.88 inches (4.7 cm) and weighs 12.2 oz (345 g). That is a shirt-pocket-adjacent handheld, and it comes with its own carrying pouch. The 1.39 lb figure covers the full packed kit with leads, thermocouple and pouch.

An optical sensor on the MM720 detects ambient light and adjusts the reverse-contrast LCD automatically, so it stays legible in a dim panel room and under bright sun on a rooftop unit. The display is 6000 count, which means it resolves to four significant digits up to 5999 and gives you 0.1V resolution well past 120V.

Resistance measures up to 60 megohms, which is high enough to check insulation continuity, thermistors, heating element windings and long conductor runs that a 40 megohm meter would just show as open. Continuity and diode test are both on the dial as well, so you can buzz out a run and check a rectifier without swapping instruments. It is not a megger, so it will not apply a high-voltage insulation test.
