1) Is the Klein MM700 multimeter safe to use on a 480V service panel or utility side equipment?
The MM700 carries a CAT IV 600V and CAT III 1000V safety rating, so it covers primary distribution and service entrance work at 600V as well as branch and feeder circuits up to 1000V. A 480V panel sits inside both ratings. Measurement range runs to 1000V AC and 1000V DC.
2) Will a Klein MM700 get rid of ghost voltage readings on a dead circuit?
That is what the Low Impedance (LoZ) mode on the MM700 is for. It drops the meter's input impedance so stray or induced voltage on an unloaded conductor bleeds off instead of reading as live, which is the usual false positive when you are tracing long runs or conduit sharing multiple circuits. Switch out of LoZ for normal high impedance voltage work.
3) Can the Klein MM700 measure inrush or motor current directly, or do I need a clamp?
Direct current measurement through the meter's own jacks tops out at 10A AC and 10A DC on the MM700, so it handles control circuits, small loads and appliance draw. Anything above 10A, including motor inrush or a full branch circuit under load, needs a clamp meter or a clamp accessory instead. Breaking the circuit to insert the meter is also not practical on most live service work.
4) Can I check HVAC duct and refrigerant line temperatures with the Klein MM700?
Yes, the included thermocouple gives the MM700 a measurement range of 0 to 1500 degrees F (-18 to 816 degrees C), which covers supply and return air, line set temperatures, and flue gas on the high end. Capacitance to 4000 microfarads also lets you check run and start capacitors on condensing units without a separate capacitor tester.
5) Does the Klein MM700 read True RMS, and does it matter for VFD and electronic ballast circuits?
The MM700 is True RMS with automatic ranging. It matters a great deal on anything with a non sinusoidal waveform, VFD outputs, electronic ballasts, LED drivers, switching power supplies, where an averaging meter reads low or high by a wide margin. If you are troubleshooting modern equipment, TRMS is the difference between a usable number and a misleading one.
