1) Is the Klein MM400 multimeter rated CAT III for panel work?
The MM400 carries a CAT III 600V safety rating and is CE certified. That covers distribution panels, feeders, and branch circuits up to 600V. It is not a CAT IV meter, so it isn't the tool for service entrance or utility-side measurements. Voltage measurement tops out at 600V AC and 600V DC.
2) Can the MM400 measure motor run current on a 10 amp circuit?
Yes, through the leads. The MM400 reads up to 10A AC and 10A DC in series. Anything above that needs a clamp meter instead, since the meter's current input stops at 10A. For in-line readings you have to break the circuit and put the meter in the path, which is why most electricians reach for a clamp on running loads.
3) What comes in the box with the Klein MM400, and do I need to buy anything to start using it?
Nothing extra is required. Test leads, a thermocouple with adapter, batteries, and the user manual all ship with the MM400. It runs on 2 x AAA cells, and there's a low battery indicator with a battery compartment you can get into without tearing the meter down.
4) Does the MM400 do temperature, or do I need a separate thermocouple meter for HVAC work?
Temperature is built in and the thermocouple ships with the meter. Range is 0 to 1000 degrees F (-18 to 538 C), which covers supply and return air, coil temps, and flue readings. 5) Do I have to select a range on the Klein MM400, or is it automatic?
It's auto-ranging, so you pick the function and the meter sorts out the scale. Readings land on a 4000 count LCD. Resistance goes to 40 megohms, and diode test plus continuity are on the dial. Note the warning on resistance and continuity: only on de-energized circuits, never live.

For an MRO or maintenance role it covers the common calls: 600V AC/DC voltage for confirming a circuit is dead, continuity for switch and heater element checks, resistance to 40 megohms, temperature for air handler troubleshooting, and capacitance for motor caps. What it won't do is read current above 10A or work on a service entrance, since it's rated CAT III 600V rather than CAT IV.
