B-LINE CR20B – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will an Eaton CR20B receptacle accept a standard 15A plug, or only 20A plugs?
The CR20B is a NEMA 5-20R duplex, and that configuration takes both standard 15A straight blade plugs and 20A T-slot plugs on a 125V, 20A circuit. That is why it gets used on general purpose commercial branch circuits where a 20A cord cap may show up later.
2) What wire size can I land on the Eaton CR20B, and does it take back wiring?
It terminates #14 through #10 AWG on side screws. Wiring is side wire with screw connections, so there is no push-in back wire option. A screw-catch feature holds the terminal screws captive so they do not back out and drop into the box while you are working in a ceiling or a tight device box.
3) Do I need a separate bonding jumper to the metal box with this receptacle?
The CR20B is auto-grounding, so the mounting strap bonds to a grounded metal box through the mounting screw. It is a two-pole, three-wire device with an equipment ground terminal, so you can still land a ground conductor on the green screw, and many specs and inspectors want that pigtail regardless. In a nonmetallic box the ground conductor to the device is the only path.
4) Can I use the CR20B in a kitchen, bathroom or outdoor location on a commercial property?
Not on its own. This is a straight blade 5-20R device with no GFCI or weather-resistant rating stated, so for locations where code requires GFCI protection you need either a GFCI receptacle at that point or a GFCI breaker ahead of it. Outdoors or in damp locations also calls for a weather-resistant device and an in-use cover. Use the CR20B for the dry general-purpose 125V outlets.
5) Is a commercial spec grade receptacle worth it over a residential grade device in an office or retail build?
Spec grade is what belongs anywhere cords get pulled daily. The CR20B is a commercial specification grade device with brass contacts and a high-impact nylon and PVC face and body, which holds plug retention and resists cracking better than the residential-grade nylon-strap devices. For a tenant office, corridor, breakroom or retail floor, this is the class of device a spec typically calls for. For heavy plug cycling on hospital or industrial equipment, look to hospital grade or extra heavy duty instead.
6) Will a brown CR20B match the devices already in my building?
The CR20B is brown, standard style, so it matches older brown device lines and brown wall plates. If your building has been standardized on ivory, white, gray or black, this one will stand out and you want the matching color code in the same commercial spec grade family instead. Worth checking one existing cover plate before you order a case for a turn.
