B-LINE SBCL1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the B-Line SBCL1 grounding lug used for?
The Eaton B-Line SBCL1 is a compression lug (long barrel style) used to terminate electrical grounding wire onto a busbar or equipment ground pad. The barrel is crimped onto the conductor with a compression tool, and the flat pad bolts down through two holes, which keeps the lug from spinning on the bar under torque or fault current. It is tinned copper, so it can land on copper or aluminum bar without a direct dissimilar-metal contact at the joint.
2) Do I need a special tool to install these B-Line compression lugs?
Yes. These are compression lugs, not mechanical set-screw lugs, so they require a hydraulic or battery crimp tool with the correct die for the barrel. Nothing in the pack does the crimp for you, and bolts for the two-hole pad are supplied separately or come with the ground bar. If you do not have a crimper on the truck, a mechanical set-screw lug is the alternative, though it is generally not accepted where a compression termination is specified.
3) Do I get one lug or a box when I order the B-Line SBCL1?
The SBCL1 ships as a pack of 10 lugs, not a single piece. Total pack weight is 6 lb. For telecom rack and busbar grounding work that usually covers a full rack lineup in one order, but if you only need one or two terminations you are still buying the ten.
4) Is a two-hole lug required for grounding, or can I use a one-hole lug?
Two-hole is the right call on a ground bar. A single-bolt lug can rotate on the pad if the bolt loosens or a fault current pulse hits it, which opens the bond. The SBCL1 lands with two bolts, so the pad is mechanically locked against rotation. That is why two-hole compression lugs are the standard termination on telecom and data center ground busbars. Match the hole spacing to the bar you are landing on before you order.
5) Why tinned copper instead of bare copper for a ground lug?
The tin plating on the SBCL1 is a corrosion barrier. Bare copper oxidizes at the bolted interface over time and joint resistance creeps up, which is the last thing you want on a ground path. Tinning also lets you bolt a copper lug to an aluminum bar with less galvanic activity at the contact face. In a damp or outdoor enclosure it is the version you want.
6) What is the long barrel on these lugs for?
Long barrel means extra crimp length, so the lug takes two or more crimps along the barrel instead of one. That gives more contact area with the strands and a stronger mechanical pull-out value, which is why long barrel is the usual spec for grounding and high-fault-current terminations. The SBCL1 is a long barrel compression lug.
