1) Can the B-Line E57-18LE20-A proximity sensor be wired directly into a 120V AC control circuit?
Yes. The E57 sensor, model E57-18LE20-A, is a 2-wire AC device with a normally open output and an input voltage range of 20 to 132V, so a standard 120V AC control circuit is inside its range. It switches up to 250 mA at 250V, which means it drives a relay coil, contactor pilot, or AC input card, not a motor or solenoid load directly. Because it is 2-wire, it goes in series with the load like a limit switch rather than sourcing its own output.
2) Can this inductive sensor be mounted flush in a metal bracket or machine face?
No. The E57-18LE20-A is a non-embeddable (unshielded) sensor, so it needs a clear zone of surrounding metal around the sensing face. Flush-mounting it into a steel bracket will load the field and cause false or constant detection. If your fixture requires the barrel to sit level with the mounting surface, you need an embeddable (shielded) model instead.
3) Will this sensor survive washdown on a food processing line?
It is built for it. The barrel is 303 stainless steel and the sensor carries NEMA 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 and 13 ratings plus IP67 and IP69K. IP69K is the high pressure, high temperature washdown rating, and the 4X plus stainless housing covers corrosion from caustic cleaners. Operating range is -13 to 158 F (-25 to 70 C), so chilled rooms are fine, but it is not an oven or steam-sterilizer part.
4) Can I use the E57-18LE20-A to switch a solenoid valve or small motor directly?
No. Maximum AC current is 250 mA, so the sensor's output is a pilot-duty device only. Run it to a relay, contactor coil within that rating, or a PLC AC input, and let that device carry the valve or motor. Exceeding 250 mA will cook the output stage.
5) Will this inductive sensor detect plastic or aluminum, or only steel?
Inductive sensors respond to metal only, so plastic, glass, wood and liquid will not trigger the E57-18LE20-A. It will pick up non-ferrous metals like aluminum, brass and copper, but at a reduced range compared with mild steel. If the target is non-metallic, you need a capacitive or photoelectric sensor instead.
6) Can a maintenance tech tell if this sensor is triggering without a meter?
Yes. The E57 inductive sensor has a 360 degree viewable LED, so the output state reads from any angle on the barrel, including from behind a guard where you can only see one side of it. That is the fastest way to prove a target is being seen before you go chasing wiring at the panel.
7) How repeatable is this sensor for position sensing on an index or stop?
Accuracy is within 3% of sensing range, which is tight enough for machine indexing, part-present checks, and end-of-travel stops. For tighter positional work than that, you would move to a mechanical limit switch or an encoder rather than an inductive proximity sensor.
