1) Can the B-Line E57 proximity sensor run directly off 120V AC without a DC power supply?
Yes. The E57RAL18A2E is a 2-wire AC sensor with a 20-250 Vac input range, so it wires straight into a 120V or 240V control circuit with no 24V DC supply needed. Switching capacity is 250 mA at 250Vac, so the load it drives (relay coil, contactor coil, PLC AC input) has to stay inside that.
2) What size mounting hole does this 18mm tubular inductive sensor need?
The barrel measures .71 in in diameter and 3.46 in long, which is the standard 18mm threaded tubular body. It drops into an 18mm clearance hole in a bracket or machine panel and is locked with the jam nuts front and back.
3) Is this an unshielded or shielded inductive sensor, and does that change how I mount it?
Unshielded. That gives a longer sensing range than a shielded barrel of the same diameter, but the field spreads off the sides, so it cannot be mounted flush in metal. Leave a clear non-metallic zone around the face and keep it set back from surrounding steel or you will get false trips.
4) Will this sensor survive washdown or outdoor use?
The housing is stainless steel and rated NEMA 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 and 13 (IP67), so it handles hosedown, dust, oil and temporary submersion. Operating range is -13 to 158 F (-25 to 70 C). The 4X rating plus stainless is what makes it usable in food plants and wet mechanical rooms where a plated brass barrel corrodes.
5) Can I tell from the sensor itself whether it is detecting the target?
There is a red LED on the barrel that shows output status, so you can set the gap and confirm detection at the machine without a meter. Handy during commissioning and for a maintenance tech chasing an intermittent.
6) Is the output normally open or normally closed?
Normally open. The 2-wire AC circuit closes when a metal target enters the sensing field. If your logic needs a break-on-approach signal, either invert it in the PLC or order the normally closed version.
7) Does this inductive sensor have short circuit protection?
No. Protection is listed as none on the E57RAL18A2E, so the load side needs its own fusing or current limiting. Keep the load at or under 250 mA and fuse the branch accordingly.
8) Will this inductive sensor detect plastic or aluminum targets?
It is an inductive proximity type, so it only detects metal. Plastic, wood, glass and liquid are invisible to it. Ferrous steel gives the full rated range; aluminum, brass and stainless targets reduce it, so size the gap accordingly. For non-metallic targets you need a capacitive or photoelectric sensor.
9) How repeatable is this sensor for position or counting work?
Accuracy is under 3 percent, which is fine for part-present, end-of-travel and counting duty on conveyors and machine guarding. It is not a measuring device, so for tight dimensional work use a proper displacement sensor.
