The R056 is a beveled rectangular rose, the decorative trim plate that sits against the door face around the knob or lever spindle. It is the plate only, in solid brass, so the knob or lever, spindle and privacy latch are separate items. Function is privacy, meaning it is prepped for the push-button or turn-button style privacy set used on bedroom and bathroom doors rather than a keyed opening.

Order the pair when you are trimming both faces of the door, which is the normal privacy install. Order a half pair when you only need one side, for example replacing a single damaged or mismatched plate, or where the other face is already correct. Both options exist in every finish offered.
