BEA 10BR3X – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the BEA BR3-X logic module run off my 24V door operator power supply?
The BR3-X runs on 12 to 24 VAC or VDC, plus or minus 10 percent, so a standard 24V access control or operator supply powers it directly. Draw is 30 to 130 mA, which is small enough to share an existing supply as long as you have that headroom after the strikes and operators are counted. If you are feeding a wet input rather than dry contacts, that input takes 5 to 24 VAC/VDC.
2) Can the BR3-X switch my electric strike and maglock directly, or do I need a separate relay?
Check the amps against the relay you land on. Relay 1 and relay 2 are each rated 3 A at 24 VAC / 30 VDC dry. Relay 3 is the small one at 1 A @ 24 VAC / 30 VDC. If you use relay 1 wet instead of dry, it drops to 1 A. Most 24 VDC electric strikes and maglocks sit well under 3 A, so relay 1 or 2 handles them. Put the low-draw stuff (operator activation input, signal to a card reader panel, an indicator) on relay 3, and add an interposing relay for anything above the rating on the leg you have chosen.
3) How do I sequence an automatic door so the lock releases before the operator opens?
That is what the sequencer functions on a BR3-X are for. It carries 13 selectable logic functions, including a 2-relay sequencer with inhibitor, a 2-relay sequencer with door position deactivation timer, a 3-relay sequencer with "1-shot", and a 3-relay sequencer with an independent relay. You set the delay between relays, up to 60 seconds, with 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 second increments available, which is the range you actually work in for a lock-then-open sequence. Hold time is adjustable up to 60 seconds per relay.
4) Is there a logic module that will run a single-occupancy restroom with an occupied indicator?
The BR3-X has two dedicated restroom modes built in, normally locked and normally unlocked, so you do not have to build the logic out of discrete timers and relays. With three relays you can drive the lock, the operator, and an occupied indicator or annunciator off one module. The restroom modes are two of the 13 functions you select on the unit.
5) Can the BEA BR3-X handle a vestibule interlock so both doors cannot be open at once?
Yes, two ways. There is an interlock timer function and an interlock ratchet/latching function among the selectable modes. The timer version releases the second door after a set period, the ratchet version holds the state until it is reset. A 2-way 2-relay sequence mode is also on board if you need the sequence to run in either direction of travel.
6) What kind of inputs does the BR3-X take from a push plate or card reader?
All four inputs (1, 2, 3 and 4) are dry contact. A push plate, a wall switch, a motion sensor relay output, or the dry form-C output of an access control panel wires straight in. If your source device only gives you a voltage signal, the module also accepts a wet input at 5 to 24 VAC/VDC. Four inputs is what lets one module take an interior actuator, an exterior actuator, a card reader release and a door position switch at the same time.
7) What size enclosure or header space do I need for a BR3-X logic module?
The module measures 5.2 in (W) x 1 in (H) x 2.2 in (D) in an ABS plastic housing, so it fits in a door header, a transom, or alongside other boards in a control cabinet. Leave clearance beyond those numbers for wiring access and service, since all terminal blocks land on the face of the unit.
8) Can I mount a BR3-X in an unheated vestibule or an exterior door header?
Operating range is -15 deg. F to 150 deg. F, which covers most unconditioned headers and vestibules in North America. One caveat worth knowing: if you are running AC voltage with a wet output above 0.9 A, the top of the range drops to 130 deg. F.
9) Can one logic module lock a door at night and leave it on automatic during the day?
The BR3-X includes a 3-relay sequencer with day/night mode, so the same unit can run one behavior during business hours and a different one after hours, switched from a timeclock or panel output into one of its dry contact inputs. That is the function to select when a storefront or lobby entrance has to go from free automatic operation to credential-only.
10) Do I need a separate timer relay if I already have a BR3-X?
