BEA 10PBS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the BEA 10PBSX push plate work with my existing automatic door operator, or do I have to run new wire to it?
Either way works. The 10PBSX can be hard wired straight to the door operator, or paired with one of BEA's wireless transmitters so you don't have to pull wire from the plate location back to the operator. The switch behind the plate is a single-pole Cherry switch, 15 A, wired COM / NO / NC, so it drops into whatever dry-contact activation input your operator uses. If you go wireless, the plate works on the 900, 433 or 300 MHz frequencies.
2) What size opening do I need to cut for a 4.75 inch square push plate, and can I surface mount it instead?
The 10PBSX actuator is a 4-3/4 inch square plate and it mounts to either a surface mount box or a flush mount box, so you are not forced to cut into the wall. Surface boxes are the usual answer on block, tile, or a finished jamb where you can't get behind the wall; flush mounting into a recessed box is the cleaner look where you have the cavity. The plate itself is the same either way, the box is what changes.
3) Which faceplate graphic should I order on a BEA 10PBSX push plate for an ADA entrance?
Six graphics are offered on the 10PBSX: blue text only, blue handicap logo and text, blue "PUSH TO OPEN" text with the alternate handicap logo, white handicap logo and text, blue "PUSH TO EXIT" text only, and blue handicap logo only. For a public accessible entrance most specs call for the blue plate carrying the handicap logo, with or without text. Use the "PUSH TO EXIT" plate on the inside of the opening so people leaving aren't reading "push to open" on the egress side. The white logo plate is the one to pick when the architect wants the graphic to read against a dark or stainless surround.
4) Is a 4.75 inch square push plate durable enough for a hospital or school entrance that gets hit all day?
The faceplate is 16 gauge, 304 2B stainless steel over a 1/8 inch thick aluminum backplate, which is why the 10PBSX holds up on healthcare and education entrances where the plate gets struck with hands, carts, and wheelchair footrests. Stainless also takes the repeated disinfectant wipe-downs a healthcare corridor sees without the graphic lifting the way a printed plastic actuator does.
5) Does the BEA 10PBSX come with mounting screws, or do I need to supply my own?
Mounting screws are part of the package: stainless steel 6-32 x 1 inch and 8-32 x 1 inch, with Allen heads taking a 5/64 key. Two thread sizes are supplied because surface and flush boxes tap differently. Bring a 5/64 hex key to the job, that is the one tool the kit assumes you have. What is not in the plate itself is the mounting box and, if you are going wireless, the transmitter and receiver, though BEA sells the 4.75 inch square actuator as complete kits with plate, box, and optional wireless devices together.
6) What is the difference between a 4.75 inch square push plate and a round or 6 inch actuator for automatic door activation?
The 4-3/4 inch square format is the compact actuator: it fits on a narrow wall return, a mullion face, or a jamb-side location where a larger round or rectangular plate would not land flat. Because it is small, it carries less graphic area, which is why the 10PBSX is offered with logo-only and text-only faceplates as well as combined logo-and-text versions. Choose the larger actuator formats where the plate is the primary wayfinding element in a wide open lobby wall, and the 4.75 inch square where wall space is the constraint.
7) Can I wire the BEA 10PBSX push plate normally closed instead of normally open?
Yes. The Cherry switch inside the 10PBSX is single-pole with COM, NO and NC terminals brought out, so you can land the pair on either the normally open or the normally closed contact depending on what the operator or access control panel expects. It is rated 15 A and is UL Recognized as a component. Most automatic operator activation inputs want a momentary normally open dry closure, so COM to NO is the common wiring.
8) I need to match the push plates already installed across my building. Is the 10PBSX the same plate on every door?
It is one actuator in six faceplate graphics, so the plate size, stainless finish and switch are identical from door to door and only the printed graphic changes. That is what lets you run the blue logo-and-text plate on every public entrance and the "PUSH TO EXIT" plate on the egress side of the same openings without the hardware looking mismatched.
