Metallics HSSBG2164E – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 21/64 HSS bit cut steel strut and electrical enclosures, or do I need cobalt?
High speed steel with a black and gold oxide coating handles mild steel strut channel, enclosure sheet metal, aluminum, and wood, which covers most electrical rough-in work. For stainless steel or hardened plate, step up to a cobalt bit instead, since plain HSS dulls quickly in those materials.
2) What does the black and gold finish on an HSS drill bit actually do?
On the Metallics 21/64 bit, the black oxide portion resists rust and holds cutting fluid, and the gold (titanium-style) coloring marks the ground flute area. The practical benefit on a jobsite is corrosion resistance in a damp van or gang box and less chip welding when drilling steel.
3) What is the exact part number to order this 21/64 Metallics bit?
Order Metallics part number HSSBG2164E. That single number covers the 21/64 inch HSS black and gold jobber bit; there are no finish or length variations to specify.
