Blackburn 500 T 500 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this tee connector crimped or bolted?
It is a compression fitting. All three barrels are crimped with a hydraulic compression tool and the correct die for the conductor size, so there is nothing to torque and no bolts to re-check. If you need a connection you can take apart later for testing, use a mechanical set-screw or bolted tap connector instead.
2) Can I use the Blackburn 500 T 500 on aluminum conductor?
No. It is a copper connector, tin-plated, and should be used on copper conductor. For aluminum or for a mixed copper-to-aluminum tap you need a connector specifically rated AL9CU or dual-rated.
3) Does this tee connector come insulated, or do I have to cover it myself?
It ships bare. The insulation material is listed as none, so the installer supplies the cover: heat shrink tubing, a molded insulating boot, or taped buildup per the job spec. Size the shrink to clear the 1.060 inch barrel diameter and the full 6.062 inch main length plus your stripped conductor.
4) Why choose a tee connector instead of two separate splices for a 500 kcmil tap?
A tee lets the main conductor run through uncut while a 500 kcmil tap leaves at right angles, so you make one connection instead of cutting the feeder and building it back up with a splice plus a tap. Use it for service entrance and feeder taps where the run has to stay continuous. If the main is actually being cut and joined end to end with no branch, an inline compression splice is the simpler part.
5) Does the tin plating matter on a copper compression tee?
Tin plating on the copper body slows oxidation on the contact surfaces and in storage, which matters on service entrance work in damp vaults and outdoor pedestals. It does not change the conductor material the connector is meant for, which is copper.
6) Is this connector made in the USA for jobs with domestic sourcing requirements?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what government, school district, and other publicly funded projects with domestic content language usually need documented on the submittal.
