Blackburn XT33 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn XT33 tee-tap clamp accept?
The XT33 is a copper tee-tap clamp sized for a 500 to 1000 kcmil run conductor with a 250 to 500 kcmil tap. It handles two conductors total: the main run plus one tap through its single secondary port. Outside anything in that range, you need a different clamp size in the series.
2) Is the XT33 tap clamp rated for medium voltage work?
Yes, it carries a 35 kV rating, which covers primary distribution taps as well as any secondary or service work. It ships bare with no insulating cover or enclosure, so the connection has to be insulated or taped in the field, or installed inside enclosed gear.
3) Can I use the Blackburn XT33 on aluminum conductors?
No. The XT33 is a copper-only tee-tap clamp, with a copper alloy casting and silicon bronze bolts. For aluminum or mixed copper-to-aluminum taps you need a connector specifically rated AL9CU or dual-rated, not this one.
4) Does the XT33 need a crimping tool or special press?
No press or die set required. It is a mechanical bolted clamp, so you strip and clean the conductors, seat the run and the tap, and torque the silicon bronze bolts with a wrench. That is what makes it practical for field taps and repairs where dragging a hydraulic crimper into a manhole or vault is not realistic.
5) Mechanical tap clamp or compression tap connector, which should I use?
A mechanical clamp like the XT33 bolts on and can be loosened and re-seated, so it suits field taps, temporary feeds, and work where the cable may be re-pulled later. A compression tap is permanent and needs matched dies and a hydraulic tool. If the tap is going to be cut into an existing 500-1000 kcmil copper run without pulling the run out, the bolted clamp is the practical choice.
6) Is the Blackburn XT33 plated or bare copper?
Bare, with no tin or other surface plating. For outdoor, direct-buried, or damp locations, plan on an oxide-inhibiting compound and proper taping or a separate cover to protect the joint, since there is no factory finish or insulation on it.
