Blackburn C 500 CPTCS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn C 500 CPTCS compression splice take?
The C 500 CPTCS is sized for 500 kcmil copper conductors, one entering each end. It is a two-conductor splice, so it joins one run to one run, not a multi-tap.
2) What does the center stop on this Blackburn splice do?
The center stop is an internal barrier in the middle of the barrel. It keeps each 500 kcmil conductor from being pushed past the midpoint, so both cables bottom out at equal depth and you get the full crimp length on each side. It gives the installer a positive indication that the conductor is inserted far enough without having to eyeball the depth.
3) Does the C 500 CPTCS come insulated, or do I have to insulate the splice myself?
It ships bare, with no insulation on the barrel. Plan on insulating it in the field, typically heat shrink tubing or tape rated for the circuit voltage, if the splice is not inside an enclosure that makes that unnecessary.
4) Can I use this copper compression splice on aluminum conductors?
No. This is a copper-only splice with a tin-plated finish. For aluminum, or for an aluminum-to-copper transition, you need a connector specifically listed AL9CU or an aluminum-bodied compression splice. Putting aluminum in a copper-only barrel is not a listed use.
5) Is this a crimp connector or a set screw splice?
Compression. You install it with a hydraulic or battery crimp tool and the correct die for a 500 kcmil copper barrel, making multiple crimps per side. If you want a tool-free, torque-wrench install instead, look at a mechanical set screw splice rather than this one.
6) Why is the barrel tin-plated if it is a copper connector?
Tin plating over the copper barrel slows oxidation on the outside of the connector and in the contact area, which matters in damp service entrance and underground vault locations. Electrically it behaves as a copper connector; the plating is corrosion protection, not a different metal for compatibility purposes.
7) Is the Blackburn C 500 CPTCS sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each. Order one per splice point, and remember a three phase plus neutral service entrance repair takes four.
8) Is this Blackburn compression splice made in the USA?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what institutional and government buyers working under domestic sourcing requirements usually need confirmed before they submit it on a bid.
