1) What label cartridges does the Brady BMP71 printer take?
The BMP71 runs cartridge media, not loose rolls. It accepts M71 Series (M71-, M71C-, M71D-, M71EP-, M71FP-, M71FT-), bulk M71 (BM71-, BM71C-, BM71E-, BM71H-) and PTL- / PTLEP- parts. Cartridges carry a smart cell, so the printer reads the material and sets itself up when you drop one in. Per the product description, BMP61, TLS 2200 and HandiMark cartridges also fit using the included roll adapter.
2) Can I use the Brady BMP71 standalone on a job site, or do I need a laptop?
Either way. It runs stand-alone with a full QWERTY keypad and a 320 x 240 pixel LCD, or connects to a PC over USB. On the PC side it works with Brady Workstation, Labelmark and MarkWare. Onboard it holds 200 MB, over 500 symbols, and serialization including linked series, so an electrician can build wire markers at the panel without a computer anywhere near.
3) Does the Brady BMP71 come with a battery and charger, or do I order those separately?
Both are in the box. It ships with an 1800 mAh rechargeable NiMH battery (packed in the box, not installed, so you fit it before first use) and the M-AC-143110 AC adapter/battery charger. Recharge takes about 4 hours, and the adapter accepts 110 to 240 V with a US plug.
4) Is the BMP71 tough enough to carry around a construction site?
It is drop tested to 1.2 metres and weighs 5.42 lb (2.46 kg) for the printer itself, sized 13 in H x 9.5 in W x 4.6 in D. Working range is 5 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90 percent non-condensing humidity, and it can be stored between -30 and 60 degrees C. That operating ceiling of 40 C is the thing to watch in an unconditioned attic or a summer mechanical room.
5) Will the BMP71 print scannable barcodes for asset tags?
Yes, linear barcodes print natively in Code 128 and Code 39, and additional symbologies including 2D come through Brady Workstation on a connected PC. At 300 dpi the bars resolve cleanly at small label sizes, and text scales from 4 pt up to 170 pt in Arial Alt Mono or Swiss 721.
6) Can the BMP71 handle a full day of labeling on a large facility rollout?
Rated for up to 1000 labels a day at a top print speed of 1.5 in/s. A single label can carry up to 25 lines of text, and print rotation is supported for wire wraps and vertical placements. Power management shuts it down after 10 minutes idle, and that timer is user configurable if constant standby suits the crew better.
7) Is the Brady BMP71 a color printer?
No. It is a single color thermal transfer printer, one ribbon color per cartridge. If you need two-color output on a single label, this is not the machine. What thermal transfer buys you instead is print that holds up to abrasion, solvents and UV better than direct thermal, which is why it suits wire markers, pipe markers and rating plates rather than throwaway labeling.
8) Does the BMP71 meet RoHS and Prop 65 requirements for a government or healthcare facility purchase?
Yes on both counts as recorded: EU RoHS compliant, passing exemption 2015/863, and it does not contain a California Prop 65 listed substance. It also meets FCC Part 15 Class A, and no SDS is required for it. For shipping paperwork, it is not a DOT regulated product.
9) Do I need a separate cutter, or does the BMP71 cut labels itself?
Cutting is built in. A single-hand manual actuated cutter makes a straight cut, so you print and tear off one-handed while you are up a ladder. There is also a label retention feature that holds the cut label rather than dropping it. Media can be continuous tape or die-cut labels.
