Bobrick 296x18 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What are the actual dimensions of the Bobrick B-296x18 washroom shelf?
The B-296x18 is 18 inches (455mm) long by 6 inches (150mm) wide, and stands 3 inches high at the mounting bracket. That 3 inch bracket height is the number that matters if you're fitting it above a lavatory or under a mirror, since it sets how much clearance you need below the shelf line.
2) How does the Bobrick 296x18 shelf mount to the wall?
It's a surface mounted shelf, carried on 16-gauge (1.6mm) stainless steel brackets. No wall recess or in-wall prep is needed, so it goes onto finished tile, drywall, or block after the fact. Anchors should be chosen to suit your substrate.
3) Is this shelf heavy enough duty for a public or high traffic restroom?
The shelf is 18-gauge (1.2mm) type 304 stainless steel with 16-gauge brackets, which is the construction Bobrick uses for commercial washrooms rather than residential bath. A 3/4 inch (19mm) return edge on the shelf stiffens the panel so it resists bowing under load and along the front.
4) Will the front edge of this stainless shelf cut anyone using it?
No. The front edge of the B-296x18 is hemmed, meaning the sheet is folded back on itself so there is no exposed raw stainless edge at hand height. That's the detail institutional buyers look for in schools, healthcare, and detention-adjacent washrooms.
5) What finish does the Bobrick 296x18 come in, and will it match other Bobrick washroom accessories?
Satin finish stainless steel is the only finish offered on the B-296x18. Satin type 304 is Bobrick's standard washroom accessory finish, so it reads consistently alongside satin grab bars, paper dispensers, and mirror frames already on the wall in most commercial restrooms.
6) Is a 6 inch deep shelf enough, or do I need a wider one?
Six inches of depth takes soap, toiletry bottles, gloves, or a folded towel, and it keeps projection into the room tight where circulation space is limited. If you're staging larger items such as bulk dispenser refills or a diaper bag, a shelf deeper than 6 inches is the better call. The 18 inch length here is the mid-size run for a single lavatory station.
7) Is stainless steel the right shelf choice for a wet shower or steam area?
Type 304 stainless with a satin finish is the standard choice for wet washroom environments because it won't rust out the way plated or painted steel does, and it cleans with ordinary washroom chemicals. Chrome-plated brass or plastic shelves are cheaper but show wear faster under constant moisture and institutional cleaning.
