1) Will the B-4390 soap dish mount in a standard stud wall, or does it need a masonry pocket?
It ships with a mounting clamp made for stud walls, so it recesses into a framed drywall partition without a separate masonry box. You still need 4 inches of clear depth in the cavity behind the finished wall, which a 2x4 stud bay gives you. In solid masonry you would need a different recessed unit sized for a block pocket.
2) Can I use the B-4390 soap dish on a tile-over-backer wall that's already finished?
It is a recessed unit, so the wall has to be opened up to a 6 by 4 inch pocket with 4 inches of depth behind it. On an existing tiled wall that means cutting tile and backer and confirming you are between studs, not through one. If you cannot open the wall, a surface-mounted soap dish is the retrofit answer instead.
3) Is the Bobrick B-4390 soap dish ADA compliant?
Yes, the B-4390 is listed as ADA compliant. Because it recesses into the wall rather than projecting, it does not create a protruding-object issue in the shower or at the lavatory. Mounting height still has to be set by the installer to meet reach range for the fixture it serves.
4) What material and finish is the recessed B-4390 soap dish, and will it hold up in a multi-family shower?
Type 304 stainless steel with a matte polished (satin) finish. Type 304 is the standard corrosion-resistant grade used in wet washroom environments, which is why it holds up in tub and shower surrounds where a plated or plastic dish pits out. The satin finish also hides water spotting better than a bright polish.
5) Does the B-4390 include a grab bar, or is that separate?
The B-4390 is a combination unit: the soap dish and the bar are one assembly, cast into the same 7-3/16 by 5 inch stainless face. The bar is a hand-hold across the front of the dish, not a load-rated ADA grab bar, so do not substitute it for a code grab bar in an accessible shower.
6) How many finish options does the Bobrick B-4390 come in?
One: satin, the matte polished stainless finish. There is no bright polish, bronze, or black option on this model, so if you are matching a washroom package already specified in satin stainless it drops right in.
