Metallics JG5HTB50 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How strong is a Grade 5 hex tap bolt, and is it strong enough to mount a motor?
Grade 5 means medium carbon steel, heat treated, with 105,000 psi minimum tensile and yield and a hardness of Rockwell C19-30. That is the normal choice for bolting a motor to machinery or for automotive and truck repair work, where a Grade 2 bolt would be marginal. If your drawing calls out Grade 8 or a specific alloy, this is not a substitute.
2) Will a 1/4-20 hex tap bolt pass through a 1/4 inch hole?
Shank outside diameter is 0.2450 to 0.2500 in., so a nominal 1/4 in. drilled hole is a tight interference fit at best. Drill 17/64 in. or 9/32 in. for a clearance hole, or thread the hole 1/4-20 if you are tapping into the part. Threads are cut to ASME B18.2.1-2012, so they mate with any standard 1/4-20 nut or tapped hole.
3) What wrench or socket size fits these 1/4-20 Grade 5 hex tap bolts?
The hex head measures 0.428 to 0.438 in. across the flats, which is a 7/16 in. wrench or socket. Head height runs 0.150 to 0.163 in., and the wrenching height (the part of the head a socket can actually grab) is 0.106 in., so use a six-point socket rather than a worn open-end if you are pulling these to full Grade 5 torque.
4) Are these zinc plated bolts okay for outdoor or damp locations?
These are steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor service, equipment rooms, and occasional moisture fine, but it is not a marine or continuously wet finish. For wet, coastal, or washdown locations, step up to an 18-8 stainless hex tap bolt in the same 1/4-20 x 1-3/4 size instead.
5) How many bolts come in the Metallics JG5HTB50 and how are they packaged?
One hundred bolts, packed in a jar, and 100 count is the order minimum. The jar keeps loose 1/4-20 hardware contained on a service truck or on a shop shelf instead of scattering through a parts bin. Other sizes and quantities of the G5HTB and JG5HTB hex tap bolts can be had by request.
6) Do these Metallics hex tap bolts meet Buy American and ARRA requirements for a public project?
The JG5HTB50 is flagged compliant for both Buy American and ARRA. Country of origin is China. If your contract specifies domestic melt and manufacture rather than the ARRA/Buy American compliance flag, confirm which standard your spec is written to before you submit these.
7) What steel are these Grade 5 hex tap bolts made from?
Material standard is AISI 1008 through 1026 carbon steel, heat treated to reach the Grade 5 property class at Rockwell C19-30. For an MRO buyer standardizing fastener stock, that is the ordinary carbon steel Grade 5 spec, not an alloy or stainless grade.
