Metallics UBS021 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size are the Metallics UBS021 U-bolts, and are the nuts included?
The UBS021 is a 3/8-16 U-bolt, right-hand thread at 16 threads per inch, and it ships with two hex nuts per bolt. Threads follow ANSI/ASME B1.1, so they mate with standard 3/8-16 hardware you already stock. They come bagged, 10 pieces to a bag.
2) What is the opening width on the 3/8-16 UBS021 U-bolt?
Fastener width is 2 inches, so the U opening is sized to straddle a 2 inch dimension and the two legs land 2 inches apart on center of the saddle. Measure the outside diameter of what you are clamping, not the nominal size, before you commit to this one.
3) Will stainless U-bolts hold up outdoors or in a wet mechanical room?
The UBS021 is made from 18-8 stainless steel, the austenitic grade used where plated carbon steel would rust, so it suits exterior runs, rooftop equipment, and damp mechanical or plumbing spaces. The nuts meet ASTM F594, the standard covering stainless steel nuts.
4) Can I use these U-bolts on a federally funded or public works job?
Yes. The Metallics UBS021 U-bolt is flagged both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what procurement wants to see on federal, state, and institutional work. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if a specific origin certificate is required for your project file, ask before you order.
5) Do I have to buy a full bag of 10, or can I get a different size?
The UBS021 sells in a bag of 10 pieces, with 10 each as the order minimum, so a single bolt is not a stocked break. Metallics does offer other sizes and quantities in the UBS series by request if 3/8-16 x 2 inch width is not the geometry you need.
6) What trades actually use the Metallics UBS series U-bolts?
The UBS line is catalogued for electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work: clamping conduit, pipe, and tubing to strut, angle, or framing members, and anchoring equipment feet. The stainless construction is what makes it the pick over a plated U-bolt on exterior or corrosive installs.
