Metallics UBG022 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe or conduit size will the Metallics UBG022 U-bolt clamp?
The UBG022 is a 3/8-16 U-bolt with a 3-1/8 inch leg length and 2-1/2 inch inside width, so it wraps round stock up to about 2-1/2 inches across. Match that opening width to the outside diameter of the pipe or conduit you are strapping, not to the nominal trade size, since OD runs larger than nominal on most conduit and pipe.
2) Does the Metallics UBG022 U-bolt qualify for Buy American or ARRA-funded jobs?
Metallics lists the UBG022 as both Buy American compliant and ARRA compliant, which is what a federal, state, or school district procurement package usually asks for on fasteners. Country of origin is recorded as multiple.
3) Are the hex nuts included with the UBG022 U-bolt or do I order them separately?
Two hex nuts ship with each U-bolt, so nothing extra is needed to make up the connection. The nuts are Grade A per ASTM A563 and the U-bolt body is ASTM A307 steel. You will still need your own backing plate or strap if the application calls for one.
4) Is the Metallics UBG022 U-bolt suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
It is galvanized steel, which is the usual choice for exterior runs, rooftop supports, and damp indoor areas where plain finish would rust. For continuous immersion or heavy chemical exposure, a stainless U-bolt is the better call.
5) What nut and wrench size do I need for the UBG022 U-bolt threads?
The threads are 3/8-16 UNC to ANSI/ASME B1.1, and the supplied hex nuts measure 0.551 to 0.563 inch across the flats, which is a 9/16 inch wrench. Nut height runs 0.320 to 0.337 inch. Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2.
6) How many U-bolts come in a bag of Metallics UBG022, and is there an order minimum?
They are bagged 10 per bag, and 10 each is the minimum order quantity. Figure roughly 1070 g for the packaged weight. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities are available by request if 2-1/2 inch is not the width you need.
7) Is an ASTM A307 U-bolt strong enough to hang pipe, or do I need a higher grade?
ASTM A307 is the standard low-carbon bolting grade and is what galvanized U-bolts for conduit, pipe strapping, and general support work are normally made from. For engineered seismic bracing or a load the drawing assigns a specific proof load to, check the spec against the structural requirement before substituting this one in.
