Metallics UB024 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size does the Metallics UB024 U-bolt fit?
The UB024 is sized for 3 inch pipe. Its 3-1/2 inch inside width gives the clearance needed around a 3 inch pipe's outside diameter, and the 4-1/8 inch leg length leaves thread for the two nuts plus whatever channel or strap you are clamping through.
2) Do I need to order nuts separately with the Metallics UB024?
No. Two hex nuts ship with each U-bolt, so one bag of 10 gives you 10 U-bolts and 20 nuts. Washers are not part of the assembly, so add those if your detail calls for them.
3) Is the Metallics UB024 U-bolt OK for outdoor or damp locations?
It's zinc plated steel, which handles normal indoor and sheltered exterior service. For direct weather exposure, constant wetting, or corrosive atmospheres, a hot-dip galvanized or stainless U-bolt is the better call.
4) Can I use the UB024 U-bolt on a federally funded job with domestic content requirements?
Metallics lists the UB024 as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school, or transit procurement file usually needs on record. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if your spec demands a single named origin, confirm the mill cert with the order.
5) Will the nuts on the Metallics UB024 clear a standard strut channel slot?
The hex nuts measure 0.551 to 0.563 inch across the width and 0.320 to 0.337 inch high, dimensioned to ASME B18.2.2. That is a standard 3/8-16 hex nut footprint, so it seats like any other and takes a common 9/16 inch wrench or socket.
6) What trades use a 3 inch zinc U-bolt like the Metallics UB024?
Metallics lists it for the electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning industries. Typical use is clamping 3 inch conduit, pipe, or tube to strut, angle, or a beam clip, with the two nuts drawing the U-bolt down over a channel or strap.
