Metallics UB019 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Metallics UB019 U-bolt fit?
The UB019 is a 3/8-16 U-bolt with a 1-3/4 inch inside width and 2-3/4 inch leg length, so it clamps around pipe or conduit up to roughly 1-3/4 inches outside diameter. The width is the dimension that decides fit, not the nominal pipe call-out, so measure the OD of what you are strapping before ordering.
2) Does the UB019 U-bolt come with nuts, or do I have to order them separately?
Nuts are included. Each U-bolt ships with two hex nuts, one per leg, so no separate hardware is needed to make up the clamp. Saddles or backing plates are not part of the assembly.
3) Does the Metallics UB019 U-bolt qualify for Buy American on a public project?
It is flagged both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school district, or healthcare procurement office needs on file. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if your contract requires a single named origin per lot, confirm the origin of the specific lot you receive.
4) Is the Metallics UB019 U-bolt sold individually or in a bag?
It comes bagged, 10 pieces to a bag, and 10 each is the order minimum. If you need a different size or a different pack quantity, Metallics offers other sizes and quantities by request.
5) What material and finish is the Metallics UB019 U-bolt, and will it hold up outdoors?
Steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles dry interior and sheltered work well, but it is not a marine or continuously wet-location coating, so for exposed exterior runs, coastal sites, or chemical exposure step up to a stainless or hot-dip galvanized U-bolt instead.
6) What grade of steel is the UB019 U-bolt and its nuts?
The U-bolt itself is made to ASTM A307 and the hex nuts are Grade A per ASTM A563. Thread form follows ANSI/ASME B1.1 and the nut dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2, which is what lets you substitute a standard off-the-shelf 3/8-16 hex nut if you lose one on the job. Threads are right hand.
7) Can I use this U-bolt for plumbing and HVAC pipe, or is it electrical only?
It is catalogued on the electrical side but the stated field application covers electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work. Same clamp, same 3/8-16 threads, whether you are strapping conduit, copper, or a refrigerant line set, as long as the 1-3/4 inch opening fits the OD.
8) What size wrench or socket do the nuts on the UB019 U-bolt take?
The hex nuts measure 0.551 to 0.563 inch across the flats and 0.320 to 0.337 inch high, which is a standard 9/16 inch wrench or socket on a 3/8-16 hex nut.
