Metallics JSBH250 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Metallics JSBH250 bolt a fine thread or coarse thread 3/8 bolt?
Fine thread. The JSBH250 is a 3/8-24 hex bolt, 24 threads per inch, which is the UNF fine pitch rather than the 3/8-16 coarse pitch. It will not thread into a coarse 3/8-16 nut or tapped hole, so match it to fine-thread nuts and couplings.
2) Will 18-8 stainless bolts hold up in a food plant or a damp mechanical room?
The JSBH250 is 18-8 austenitic stainless, which is what you use where you need general atmospheric corrosion resistance, including chemical and food-processing equipment. For aggressive chemical exposure, including chlorides, step up to 316 stainless instead, which is the other austenitic grade in the same cap screw family.
3) How strong is a 3/8-24 stainless hex bolt like the JSBH250 compared to a graded steel bolt?
Tensile strength runs 100,000 to 150,000 psi minimum with a 65,000 psi minimum yield, and hardness is Rockwell B95 to C32. That puts it in the range of a medium-strength plated bolt, so if your drawing calls out an SAE Grade 8 or ASTM A325 structural bolt, stainless is not a drop-in substitute for the load case.
4) Do these Metallics stainless bolts meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JSBH250 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded or state job carrying domestic-sourcing language, this bolt will not satisfy the submittal.
5) What wrench or socket size fits the head on the Metallics JSBH250 hex bolt?
Head width across flats measures 0.551 to 0.562 in., which a 9/16 in. wrench or socket covers. Head height is 15/64 in., so clearance under a tight bracket or enclosure flange is minimal.
6) Will the JSBH250 bolt pass through a 3/8 inch drilled hole?
Shank outside diameter is 0.3690 to 0.3750 in., so it is right at nominal 3/8. Through a hole drilled exactly 3/8 (0.375) it is a tight fit at the top of tolerance. For clearance on sheet metal or strut, drill 13/32 or 7/16.
7) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JSBH250, and can I buy fewer?
It ships as a jar of 50 pieces, and 50 each is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest buying unit. Metallics does offer other sizes and quantities in this bolt family on request.
8) Can I use a stainless hex bolt for electrical equipment grounding and bonding connections?
These 18-8 stainless hex bolts are stocked as electrical fasteners and are commonly used to bolt lugs, bus, and enclosure hardware where corrosion resistance matters. Keep in mind stainless is a poorer conductor than plated steel or silicon bronze, so for a bonding path follow whatever the equipment listing or the connector manufacturer specifies for hardware.
9) Do stainless bolts like these need anti-seize when threaded into a stainless nut?
Yes, use an anti-seize on the threads. The JSBH250 is 18-8 austenitic stainless, and austenitic stainless threaded into austenitic stainless galls easily under torque, which can lock a fastener before it is seated.
