Metallics JSBH232 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JSBH232 hex bolt a coarse or fine thread, and will it take a standard 3/8-24 nut?
Fine thread. The JSBH232 is a 3/8-24 hex bolt, 24 threads per inch, so it mates with 3/8-24 fine-thread nuts and tapped holes. It will not thread into a 3/8-16 coarse nut, which is the more common 3/8 thread in general construction, so check the mating part before you order.
2) What stainless grade are these Metallics 3/8-24 hex bolts, and will they hold up outdoors or in a food plant?
18-8 stainless steel, an austenitic alloy used where general atmospheric corrosion resistance is needed, including chemical and food-processing equipment. For aggressive chemical exposure or salt-heavy environments, 18-8 may not be enough and a higher alloy such as 316 should be specified instead.
3) What wrench or socket size do I need for the JSBH232 hex bolt head?
The hex head measures 0.551 to 0.562 inch across the flats, which is a 9/16 inch wrench or socket. Head height is 15/64 inch, worth knowing if you are working in a tight recess or under a cover plate.
4) How strong are these stainless hex bolts, and are they equivalent to a grade 5 steel bolt?
Tensile strength is 100,000 to 150,000 psi minimum with a 65,000 psi minimum yield, and hardness runs Rockwell B95 to C32. That tensile range overlaps a grade 5 carbon steel bolt, but stainless has a lower yield point, so for a joint designed around grade 5 or grade 8 preload values do not substitute without checking the engineer's numbers.
5) Will the JSBH232 bolt fit through a 3/8 inch drilled hole?
Yes. Shank outside diameter is 0.3690 to 0.3750 inch, so it passes through a nominal 3/8 inch clearance hole. If your hole is drilled at exactly 0.375, it will be a tight slip fit at the top of the tolerance, so a 13/32 or 7/16 clearance hole is the safer call for field work.
6) Do these Metallics stainless hex bolts meet Buy American and ARRA requirements for a federal or institutional job?
Both the ARRA and Buy American compliance flags on the JSBH232 are marked compliant. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if your specification requires documented origin for a particular shipment, request the paperwork for the lot you receive.
7) Are nuts and washers included with the JSBH232 bolts?
No. The jar contains hex bolts only, 50 of them. Nuts, flat washers, and lock washers in 3/8-24 and matching 18-8 stainless have to be ordered separately if you want the whole assembly in the same alloy, which is good practice to avoid galvanic issues between dissimilar metals.
8) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JSBH232, and is there a minimum order?
These ship 50 bolts to a jar, and 50 each is the order minimum. The jar pack keeps loose fasteners contained on a service truck or in a shop bin. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
